Blog Action Day: Wild Animal Baby

Today is Blog Action Day, and the topic is The Environment. Bloggers across the world are going to be writing about this topic. It will be neat to see who participates!

About a year ago, a neat little book arrived in the mail addressed to Claire. It looked kinda like it was part of a magazine subscription, but it was thicker paper, and it was just her size. I was thinking it was a gift from someone, but I couldn’t tell for sure. I did some calling around, and that’s when I discovered it was a surprise birthday gift from Grandma. As what happens sometimes with gift subscriptions, the book arrived before the little “Gift for You” postcard. That’s when I found out that my mom gives all her grandkids a subscription to The National Wildlife Federation’s Wild Animal Baby.

What a great idea! Claire loves it! Every month or so (there are 10 issues per year), a new issue arrives, and she loves it to pieces (quite literally, I’m afraid). ;) I was very impressed with the quality of the books and the entertainment and educational value of the pictures and stories. They not only discuss colors, shapes, numbers and letters, but they are also fostering a love of the environment in Claire.

We read every issue of Wild Animal Baby to her over and over and over, usually starting the moment we bring it in from the mailbox. :) She never tires of looking at the different animals or the pretty pictures. She’s at the stage where she will pretend to read the book to us, as well. I can tell which page she’s on by the different sound effects she uses or her version of how the story goes.

For someone who’s not even two years old yet, it’s amazing how quickly she’s catching on, and I’m so glad that she’ll grow up to have an appreciation for the world around her. My hubby and I wanted to instill these values in her, and this subscription makes that very easy to do.

Claire loves reading Wild Animal Baby

Here she is with one of the issues.

Because Claire enjoys this book so much, I’ve given gift subscriptions to other friends of ours. It feels good knowing that our money is going to a worthy cause, and that other kids are getting to share in the Wild Animal Baby experience.

So, if you’re trying to think of a creative gift to give a little kid, check out the different subscriptions at The National Wildlife Federation. They have Wild Animal Baby for ages 0 to 4, Your Big Backyard for ages 3 to 7, and Ranger Rick for ages 7 and up.

It’s never too early to start paying attention to the world around us or understand how interconnected we all are, and Wild Animal Baby is an awesome place to begin.

Eating Right

I still get a company newsletter for a place where I worked over 10 years ago. We were like one big family, and even though I’ve moved states away, I still keep in touch with them.

In the monthly newsletter, they have updates from the different offices, trivia, games, and funny blurbs. Here is one of those that I thought was hilarious. It’s not credited to anyone specific, but here it is anyway:

Eating Right

Yesterday, I went to the doctor for my yearly physical. My blood pressure was high; my cholesterol was high; I’d gained some weight, and I didn’t feel so hot.

My doctor said eating right doesn’t have to be complicated, and it would solve my physical problems. He said just to think in colors; fill your plate with bright colors: greens, yellows, reds, etc.

I went right home and ate an entire bowl of M&Ms and sure enough, I felt better immediately. I never knew eating right could be so easy!

Fetch

Claire and Momma were playing in the living room, and Daddy was in the kitchen. Momma was getting thirsty, but Claire was insisting that she remain seated on the couch.

“Hey, Claire. Please go to the kitchen and tell Daddy to get Momma a Diet Coke out of the fridge,” Momma said to Claire. “And, then bring it to me, okay? Please?”

“Daddy, did you hear that? Give her a Diet Coke to bring to me.”

Claire danced off to the kitchen, very excited to help. Daddy got a Diet Coke out of the fridge and handed it to Claire. “Be very careful. Walk that over to Momma,” he instructed, showing her how to hold the cold can without dropping it.

Claire slowly walked across the room, holding the cold Diet Coke in her little hands. “Here, Momma! Your Diet Coke! I b’ingin’ your Diet Coke!!” She was so proud of herself.

Finally, we’ve found a practical use for a toddler. ;)

Out of sorts

Yesterday was not a very good day. The optimist in me would say that it was a “challenging” day, and that the important things were fine: Claire was happy and healthy. The house didn’t burn down. The kitties are still alive. I didn’t fall down the stairs. The realist in me is screaming about how everything else pretty much sucked, and sugar-coating the truth is a big ol’ waste of time.

I’m not even sure if the following things are related or if they all just happened at once and became intertwined.

It all started when the special program I use for my job barfed all over my computer, desk and keyboard. That’s the only way I can describe the mess it made. I consciously decided not to panic, and I rebooted. That usually works. Not this time. It barfed again, and I didn’t even think there was anything left in its stomach, but I was wrong. This time, it got all over my shirt, pants and my chair. And, I really hate that.

So, I rebooted again.

Now, the program seemed to be working, and it was actually working better than it had in weeks! But, when I went to open an Internet Explorer window, it just sat there and churned and churned, the little green progress bar (that usually goes so fast you don’t know it’s there) was stuck on two little boxes. What the…? Approximately 25 minutes later (27 to be exact, not that I’m counting), it opens, and acts like everything is fine. I can go to numerous sites, all at the speed of light. So, I opened another window to see if the glitch was gone, and nope…it sits there, stalled.

So, I rebooted again. Third time’s the charm, right?

I go to the kitchen and boot up the laptop. Everything appears to be working fine, so I know it’s not our network. I come back in my office, and everything seems to open fine on my computer, and I click on the little blue ‘e’ at the bottom of my screen, crossing my fingers. No luck. Stuck again. Why is this happening now??

So, I bring the laptop in from the kitchen and find a place for it on my desk. All the while, Claire has been asking over and over and over and over for the last 33 minutes to listen to Rollin! And Move it! And Rollin? And Move it? And, I’m beginning to lose my mind. It takes every ounce of my being to not scream at her cute little face. It’s not her fault. I try explaining that Momma’s computer isn’t working right now, but we’ll listen to her music soon.

In the meantime, my Logitech Keyboard decides to have seizures. I can no longer control the sound via my keyboard controls and there is no indication on my screen telling me which mode I’m in. This keyboard is one of those things that I never thought I needed until I had it, and now I don’t know how to do anything without it. I finally figure out how to mute the sound on my computer, but it doesn’t work on Claire. ;) I can still hear her loud and clear. She’s just sure that I’m not paying attention, so her pleas get louder and louder.

So, I try to focus on getting the laptop set up in my office. Of course, I can’t plug the laptop in where I want to, because the previous owners painted over the bottom hole on the most convenient outlet. Yes, we’ve lived here over six years. Your point? I don’t have time to dig out paint from a third hole I rarely need. So, I find an empty spot on my UPS (battery backup thingy). Success! I can now look at the websites I need to (for work) and the websites I have to (for Claire). My work program and email seem to be running fine on my computer, so I proceed with a desk that looks like I’m about ready to launch the space shuttle.

When Tech Support gets home, I waited until he was changed into his sweats and comfy t-shirt before telling him that Claire opted to boycott her afternoon nap, and oh, yeah, my computer is possessed. He worked on it a little bit last night and some this morning and figured out the problem. He also installed Mozilla Firefox, so now I’m going to use that instead of Internet Explorer. Even though IE is fixed, this is the perfect opportunity to install it and start using it. I’ve wanted to in the past, but hadn’t been motivated.

It’s cool, and I use it on the laptop, but it’s not the same. All my bookmarks were imported but they are all out of order. I automatically look at the bottom of my screen for my websites instead of at the tabs at the top of the screen. Everything I do seems to be happening in slow motion because I actually have to think about where things are. Before yesterday’s incident, I could just do. Now, I have to re-learn, remember, and then do. I’m trying really hard to summon the casual side of my perfectionism today, and I’m struggling.

So, I’m a bit out of sorts today. Just writing this all down has helped a tad. Things are starting to feel a little more balanced around here. By the end of the day, I should be feeling a lot better. Now, I should get back to work before these files eat me alive…and if that happened, who would play Rollin’ and Move It over and over and over? ;)

Photo Friday – Roar!!

Claire roaring like a lion!

With Halloween just around the corner, I was looking through some pictures I took of Claire last year.  These were taken last October, and when better to post them then now, on Photo Friday!

She was a lion, and this was the cutest costume ever!  She had a blast playing around in it.  I was shocked at how well-made it was.

Lion’s Tail  Lion reading the menu. Is the Farm Animal good here?

My hubby and I had our costumes all lined up.  We were going to be on safari.  Of course, the 31st rolled around and the temps dipped near freezing.  Our baby lion wasn’t even one-year old yet, so we didn’t really see the need in taking her out on such a cold night.  We opted to take advantage of the fact that she wouldn’t know the difference.  :)

As you can see by the pictures, she had a great time being a lion.

Cute Lion

And, if I told you she wasn’t cute, I’d be lion!  ;)

Blog Action Day – October 15th – Topic: The Environment

In my search of interesting blogs, I stumbled upon this little tidbit: Monday, October 15th, 2007 will be Blog Action Day, and the topic for discussion is the Environment.

Personally, I found out about it here. You can read more about it here or by clicking on this banner:

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day

What a great idea! I’m always on the lookout for interesting topics, so I’ve made a note to participate on Monday, October 15th. It will be interesting to see how many sites on Monday touch on this subject.

Behold the power of the Internet. ;)

I’m a collector.

I’ve started a new collection.  I’m not exactly sure how this started, and I never imagined it would reach this level.  It began with a really good one that made me laugh so hard I cried.  Then, I added a couple more to my collection.  They each brought me a bit of joy in their own ways, and I loved looking at them every day.  Then, in true obsessive-compulsive form, my collection skyrocketed, and I kept collecting different ones left and right.  I had so many that I wasn’t sure how to keep track of them all.

My husband offered his suggestions, but I thought he was being silly.  As it turns out, he was right.  I took his advice and found a new place to keep my collection.

Where is this, you ask?  GoogleReader

Yes, I’m obsessed with collecting blogs.  I find new blogs to read every day.  I love seeing who is commenting on my site, so I check out their blogs, and then I check out their comments and blogrolls.  From there, I find new specimens to add to my own collection.  I add every one of them to GoogleReader, and when I’m motivated, they get added to my blogroll.

So, even though my collection is growing bigger and bigger every day, I’m always on the lookout for something shiny to add to the mix.  If you want me to check out your site or if you know of a blog I would enjoy, just leave me a comment or send me a quick email.  [Check out the Contact / Comments Page or just email thecasualperfectionist at gmail dot com.]

As much as I hate dusting, there’s always room on the shelf for one more.  ;)

Lunch for Breakfast

Yesterday morning, Claire was watching Daddy make his lunch for work.  She was already in her highchair, but we hadn’t gotten her breakfast ready yet.

Claire was intrigued with the sandwich he was making, and she got all excited.

“Oh, Turkey!  Momma?  I NEED turkey now, please.  I NEED turkey!  Ohhh, cheese!  Momma?!  I NEED cheese now, please.  I NEED cheese!  Ohhhh, bread!  Momma!!  I NEED bread now, please.  I NEED bread!” she pleaded.

We’ve been working on being specific in asking for what you want and the difference between NEED and WANT.  To a toddler, that difference is so minute it hardly exists at all.   :)

I believe in choosing my battles, and as long as Claire is begging to eat nutritious foods, I figured I’d let her win this one.

So, Claire had lunch for breakfast…and no one was the wiser.  ;)

The reality of the situation

This is what HGTV never shows you.  The reality of the home improvement process is dirty, ugly, and messy.

Luckily, the end result is worth it…

And, this picture is only the tip of the iceberg.   ;)

What we did to the Master Bathroom

In no particular order, here is a list of things we did to the Master Bathroom in Phase One of The Master Bathroom Remodel Project:

Out with the old:

  • Tore out old tile on shower walls
  • Took out old drywall
  • Removed old insulation
  • Ripped out old vinyl flooring
  • Removed toilet
  • Removed old shower base
  • Disconnected shower drain
  • Removed old shower doors
  • Removed old shower valve
  • Removed all hardware – shower, towel bars
  • Removed old light fixture
  • Removed old window sill
  • Ripped up carpeting in front of sinks
  • Removed all moldings
  • Removed all doors

In with the new:

  • Installed new cement backboard on floor in front of sink and in shower room
  • Installed new cement backboard on walls
  • Installed new insulation and moisture barrier
  • Installed new shower valve
  • Installed tile in shower
  • Framed window with tile and installed new sill and apron
  • Installed new shower base
  • Installed a heated floor element and automatic temperature gauge/sensor
  • Ran new wiring for heated floor element controls
  • Tiled floor in shower room and in front of sinks
  • Grouted all tile
  • Installed new fan/light fixture
  • Ran new wiring for fan/light fixture so that fan and light can be operated separately on dual-switch
  • Vented new fan to the outside, through the attic
  • Installed new exhaust vent on outside of house
  • Sanded, repaired, primed and painted moldings
  • Installed moldings
  • Caulked all seams in shower, floor, moldings, around toilet, etc.
  • Sanded, repaired, primed and painted doors
  • Replaced hinges
  • Re-hung and adjusted doors (via shim and chisel)
  • Installed new door handles
  • Skim-coated walls
  • Sand out imperfections on walls
  • Primed and painted walls
  • Sanded, primed and repainted toilet lid/seat
  • Re-installed toilet
  • Mounted three new towel bars
  • Installed curved shower curtain bar
  • Installed new threshold between tile and carpet
  • Installed new shower head
  • Connected shower drain

And then the clean-up began.  (If I have the time and/or energy to relive such a painful experience, I’ll share my adventures in tape removal from shower bases.  Don’t ask.  I’m not ready yet.)  ;)

And, there are probably ten more items on each list that my hubby did while I wasn’t looking.   ;)

So, when I say that Phase Two will be simple with its meager list of: “remove old counter/sinks, refinish cabinets, install new pulls, install new counter/sinks,” this is what I’m comparing it to!  After Phase Two is completed (and believe me, I’ll document the progress on that as well), I’d like to take a break from remodeling projects until next summer.  My hubby says he does too…but I can see the way he keeps eyeing the kitchen.  ;)
