A very good thing

Well, today is a big day!! We hit a major milestone this morning, and I’m thrilled. Claire is pretty excited, too.

Yes, we called Daddy.
Yes, we called both grandmas.
Yes, she told them herself about what she’d done.

You can click on the picture to enlarge it. Clicking on it a second time will make it even bigger.

Claire and her “GREAT!” sticker

Doesn’t she look excited?

She is showing me the “GREAT!” sticker she picked out (and put on Puppy). You see, big girls get to pick out a special sticker when they pee in the potty!!

I know ‘they’ say not to get too excited about this, but how can you not!? Apparently, I got a little too excited about what happened in the potty this morning, and Claire said, “Callllllllllm down, Momma. Calllllllllllm down. Stop dancing.” :)

Claire has been practicing “sitting” on the potty for months now, but today was the first time anything happened in the potty. This is a very good thing.

So, my goal is to not go overboard with this (I’ll try), not to get too excited (too late), and let things take their course (I know I can do it). The thought of living in a diaper-free world makes me all giddy, but I know this is just the beginning. This could be a long journey, and I’m okay with that. In the meantime, I’ll just throw a party in the potty whenever I get a chance. ;)

None of my secrets are safe

Last night, my hubby and I were getting dinner ready. Claire is sitting at her place at the table, and she requests a song. (We have a laptop that stays on the kitchen table, and Claire and I listen to music, etc. during lunch, so she often has requests at night at well.)

“Momma, I wanna listen Come-a Come-a Come-a Come-a … Come in GOLD! Come in GOLD!”

“What does she want to listen to?” my hubby asks with a confused look on his face. This wasn’t her usual request for Dani California.

I honestly wasn’t paying attention, so I asked Claire to repeat what she’d said.

“I wanna listen Come-a Come-a Come-a Come-a … Come in GOLD! Come in GOLD!” This time, she sang to a very specific tune.

“Oh no!” I gasped. I can’t believe she not only remembers it, but that my secret would be out.

“WHAT!?” my hubby asked.

“I can’t believe she remembers that song! I listened to it once last week when you were working late,” I said. “Okay, maybe we listened to it twice. Still! I had no idea she’d remember it, let alone request it a week later!”

“What song??” he asked, his interest now definitely piqued.

Karma Chameleon by Boy George,” I admitted. “And, what’s funny is she actually has the tune right. Not to mention, I don’t know how old I was when I figured out that he was saying ‘karma’ and not ‘come-a’…so she’s not that far off with the lyrics.” (*Please see the note, below…)

So, here is a link to the song on youtube. Like the other youtube links to songs on my blog, the video quality isn’t the best. But, for the record, we don’t watch the videos. I minimize the screen and dance around the room.

I interrupt this post to announce: Can you believe that this song is TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OLD?? Yikes! Okay, carry on…

My hubby wanted to know what other songs would be requested in the future, and I said, “Oh, we find whatever random song from my past that pops into my head. Last week it was Boy George, Robert Palmer and Bananarama. None of my secrets are safe anymore, so I’m sure Claire will tell you all about it sooner or later.” :)

*Note: Yes, the lyrics are “come and go…come and go…” But, Claire was getting the “gold” part from the “Lovin’ would be easy if your colors were like my dream…red, gold and green” part. :)

LOST: MISSING PIECES – Jack Meet Ethan

The tenth installment of Lost: Missing Pieces is up at abc.com!

The full title of this one is Jack, Meet Ethan. Ethan? Jack. It obviously deals with Jack and Ethan, two doctors. We know Jack is a doctor. We don’t know (yet, in the storyline) that Ethan is a doctor. Knowing what we know now, it makes you wonder where he got the suitcase full of medication. And, his saying, “You’re definitely not alone,” is really fitting.

At the end of this snippet, Ethan tells Jack something that I actually believe to be true. Part of me has always thought Ethan was creepy and evil, but now I’m not so sure. Like so many things on this island, the truth is probably more complicated than we can even imagine.

And, here is a list of the snippets that they’ve shown so far on abc.com:

I can’t wait for the new season to start on January 31st! It’s been a while, so make sure your TiVOs are ready to go! :)

The Size Six Shoe Club

A couple weeks ago, we took Claire to a shoe store to have her feet measured so we could get new snow boots. Her feet have always been on the small end of the spectrum, but so are mine, so the fact that she has small feet isn’t shocking to us.

Well, she’s now wearing a Size Six shoe! (I’m not sure how that compares to other 2-yr old girls, but I’ve been told that it is still on the smaller end of things.)

The funniest thing about this? I wear a Size Six shoe! We’re wearing the same size!

Of course, it’s only the same size on paper. Obviously Claire’s Size Six shoes are found in the children’s section, and mine are found in the women’s section, but her shoe size will be easy for me to remember…for at least another month anyway. ;)

And, for the record, some of my shoes are a little smaller and some are a little bigger…it just depends on fit and what type of socks I’m wearing. As a general rule, the sixes always fit me best.

To show you how the two Size Sixes compare, here are our two favorite boots together:

Size Six Shoe Club

Granted, mine have a 1-inch platform and 3-inch heel, and hers don’t.

And, yes, I can walk in them just fine, actually. I am 5’ 6 ½” so when I wear these I feel tall. I love feeling tall. And, no, I wasn’t wearing these when I fell down the stairs, thankyouverymuch. :)

Three boots

Three boots in a row

Here is what Daddy’s favorite boots look like alongside ours. No, he doesn’t wear a Size Six. He doesn’t get to be in the Size Six Shoe Club, but we let him tag along occasionally. ;)

The restaurant wasn’t on fire, and the evening actually went well after that…

So, last night we decided to go out to eat. We knew it was Friday night, but our favorite Vietnamese restaurant I had suggested doesn’t have a long wait.

As we’re getting ready to leave, my hubby says, “You know, I’m not sure I want to drive that far. I’m actually in the mood for something a little closer.”

“Oh, that’s cool. What about that Mexican place just over there? It was really good and not very busy.”

“Well, that’s an Italian restaurant now. And, I’m actually kinda in the mood for Italian. We could go check that out, or we could finally use up some of the gift cards we’ve been forgetting to use.”

I’m always in the mood for Italian, but he isn’t, so I asked him if he was feeling well. He assured me that he didn’t have a fever, so I pulled out the gift cards in my wallet. “Well, we have just over $6 left on this one, and we have $5 on this one,” I told him.

We decided on the closer of the two and off we went.

The parking lot around this particular restaurant is always jammed, mainly because it’s poorly designed, so we never park in there. We always park in the parking lot across the way. The restaurant is next to a mall, and there’s a “street” running through the mall parking lot. It’s not technically a street per se, but it’s busier than a normal driveway.

We park and get Claire bundled up. Daddy picks her up and we all hurry to the restaurant. I’m running ahead of them, so that I can get in to check out the wait. I can hear Claire and Daddy having some sort of conversation, but I couldn’t hear what was being said.

They wait in the foyer as I go into the over-full waiting room. I realize that the wait may be too long, which is no big deal. If it’s too long, we’ll bail and go somewhere else.

The wait is going to be at least AN HOUR. If it were just the hubby and me, an hour is a doable wait. With a toddler, that’s not going to happen.

So, Daddy scoops up Claire and we head back out into the cold.

“Look! Someone lost a shoe!” I say, as I see a cute little black shoe on the street dividing the parking lot and the restaurant. No sooner were the words out of my mouth and my stomach sank. “Is that CLAIRE’S shoe!?” I yelled as I picked it up.

“My shoe! My shoe!” Claire said.

“You know, she was saying something when we were coming to the building, but I was so focused on getting her in the building that I wasn’t really paying attention,” Daddy explained.

“No way! I’m so glad we decided not to stay at the restaurant! Who knows what would have happened to the shoe had we not found it right away!” I said, hoping we would have noticed that it was missing and then looked for it…knowing that it may have been lost forever.

As we get to the car, I realize that my remote keyless entry won’t work. My hubby’s copy of it never works for him, and I always make fun of him. Mine has always worked…until tonight. After trying a few clicks, I run around the car and open the driver’s door the old-fashioned way and get the other doors unlocked.

Meanwhile, Claire is still yelling about her shoe. We’re cold. We’re frazzled. This isn’t the relaxing Friday evening out we’d planned.

We decide to abandon the “let’s use up the rest of our gift cards” idea and go to that new Italian restaurant close to our house.

Just then, we look up and see two fire trucks, the Fire Chief Suburban, two police cars and an ambulance go by. They’re headed the same direction we are.

My hubby turns to look at me and says, “If the restaurant is on fire, we’re going home and ordering take-out.”

“Deal,” I said, wondering what else could possibly go wrong. :)

Naughty Puppy

Apparently Puppy was hitting people. Those who hit people have to sit in the time-out corner. Rules are rules.

Personally, I didn’t witness the crime, but Claire was very distressed and told me that Puppy needed a time-out…so a time-out he got. She put him in the corner and made me set the timer on the microwave for two minutes. (I don’t think Puppy was expecting Claire to rat him out so quickly…but she even tells on herself. Unfortunately for him, he learned his lesson the hard way.)

Clicking a second time will show even more detail.

I don’t think Puppy will hit anyone again. (Even though, if you ask me, he looks a little too happy for someone sitting in the time-out corner.) After the timer went off, he said he was sorry and gave me a kiss…so hopefully he’s learned his lesson. ;)

Thank You Photo Card

I think most everyone should have received their Thank You Cards in the mail by now, so I’m going to post the picture online! (I didn’t want to ruin the surprise.)

Claire colored special pictures on the Thank You Cards for her birthday presents, but for the Thank You Cards for her Christmas presents, I went with my old stand-by…photo cards!

I love photo cards. They are so versatile, simple and fun to make. I’ve had fun putting together photo cards for all kinds of occasions in the past: Claire’s birth announcement, Holiday Cards, Valentine’s Day Cards, or Just Thinking of You cards. I even used a picture of Claire taken on her first birthday for her Thank You cards for her gifts from that event.

I usually use whichever major retailer is offering the better deal at the time, and I create them online and have them delivered to the house (or have them printed for pick-up, depending on my schedule). When used as Thank You Cards, they are a neat way to thank the gracious givers of gifts and also give those people a cute picture of Claire at the same time.

It’s pretty easy to have “Thank you! Love, Claire” printed on the card with enough room left over to write a personalized thank you note on each one. (I love things that save me time, yet leave my options open for including a personal touch.)

Here is the picture we chose this year for the Holiday Thank You Photo Cards:

If every picture is worth 1,000 words, this one is worth 1,002…the last two being Thank You, of course. ;)

Famous Last Words

I’m standing in the kitchen, wrapped in my towel, having just gotten out of the shower.  Daddy is feeding Claire breakfast.

I can’t remember exactly what brought me out to the kitchen, but something always distracts me while I’m trying to get ready.

The three of us were engaged in the typical lively banter of a lazy weekend.

Suddenly, I remember that I was in the middle of something and turn toward the hallway. “I’d better go get ready!  I need to go put on my moisturizer.  I can feel my face cracking!”

“That’s because it’s old,” my hubby said right before he burst into a fit of laughter.

He didn’t even pretend to say “dry.”  Didn’t even pretend! But, the way it all happened and with the look on his face, I couldn’t help but laugh.

“You wanna play, old man?”

“NO! No.no.no.no.no.no!” he said, gasping for air, knowing he’d be no match for me once the battle started.

“I didn’t think so.”  And, then it took every ounce of my being not to hit him with my walker.  ;)

Rock Band Update: Addendum

At 5pm, Claire had had enough of me working my day-job and told me it was time to go downstairs and sing. I was in a good stopping-place, and it was time for a break!

So, sing we did! The last two songs in the Vocals List are completed! All 58 songs have been passed in Expert Level, so I no longer have the “but I’ve never even heard this song before!” excuse. ;) And, I didn’t get any achievement points for it, but I “earned” a silver microphone to go with the gold one I got for completing the original tour.

I will say that one of the last songs (second to last, actually) is originally sung by Timmy! Yes, Timmy! of South Park fame. What? That’s a real song? How funny!

In honor of there being two Rock Band Updates today, here is a neat webcomic I found at xkcd.com:

Rock Band by xkcd

A direct link to the comic (by Randall Munroe) can be found here.

Real or not, Rock Band sure is fun! ;)

Typing out loud

I don’t normally copy images off the internet and post them for fear of accidentally stealing someone’s special something (unless it says all over the place that it’s okay…), but here is a cool picture I found on Le Petit Chic’s website.

(Hi, Katie! I took a picture off your website. I hope that’s okay.  Edited to add: She said it’s okay!  Whew…The originator is listed below in the comments.)

Type something out loud, please?

Like the little picture says, it’s all about delurking today. I love my stat counter and seeing how many people visit. I know a lot of people don’t comment, and that’s okay. To those of you who do, thank you! Reading comments makes me smile! It reminds me that I’m not just throwing words out into a void. It’s cool to be reminded that I’m not alone.

So…Come out, come out, wherever you are! Don’t be shy. Say something! ;)
