Claire at Claire’s Falls

In June, on our trip back to the Midwest, we had the opportunity to visit and explore Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo. The Omaha Zoo is one of the best in the nation, if not the world. It’s incredible.

We’ve been able to stop by in the past, but we’ve never been able to spend more than a couple hours there at a time.

This time was different. We spent all of one Friday there and then came back the following Tuesday to see what we’d missed. It was fantastic!

When we visited the zoo in 2006, imagine our surprise in finding a waterfall with Claire’s name on it. Literally.  (In both photos, you can see the “Claire’s Falls” sign.)  In this photo, Claire isn’t quite a year old yet.

This year, I knew that I wanted to get another photo of Claire in front of “her” waterfall.

…and this is one of my favorite photos from the trip!

  • Even as an adult going to Omaha for a long weekend by myself, I love that zoo. The domes and the nursery are my favorites. My only problem was finding a way back to the Imax when I had tickets to the next show and none of the transports were running on a regular schedule. (Never go to the far side of the park unless you allow at least 45 minutes to run all the way back for the show.) I’ll have to look for Claire’s waterfall the next time I go!

  • According to wiki, here is the info about the waterfall. It’s near the Ape House and Hubbard Orangutan Forest

“The Hubbard Orangutan Forest opened in two phases during 2005 — first phase was opened in May 2005 and the second phase opened in late summer 2005 — at a cost of $8.5 million. The first phase is the outdoor habitat that includes two 65-foot (20 m) tall, 100-short-ton (91-metric-ton) Banyan trees interconnected with vines enclosed by a stainless steel netting. A 20-foot (6.1 m) waterfall is named after Claire Hubbard, the Orangutan Forest’s primary donor. The second phase is the indoor habitat that has 3,126 square feet (0.07 acres; 290 m2).” ~Source

  • My, what a difference a few years makes. LOVE the crown.

Tell me, how does your husband feel always having his head cutoff in pictures? :)

  • The crown was made on-site in honor of World Ocean Day! She was thrilled with it, obviously. The photo editing was by request. He’s still a bit miffed that he actually shows up “on film” at all. ;)
