Hey, hey, it’s my birthday!

What?  Was the title too subtle? :) I’ve been a long believer in the fact that if someone forgets your birthday, it’s totally your own fault.  Ha!  Just be thankful I didn’t start the birthday countdown at the beginning of the year like I usually do.

I’m slackin’ in my old age.

Speaking of which, I’m turning a pseudo-mile-marking year today…can you guess what it is??

THIRTY FIVE.

I’m like totally in a new age-bracket, dude.

(Thus made obvious by my usage of the word “dude.”)

But, for the record, I still feel 27.  I don’t know what it is about that age, but that’s how old I think I am until I remember that I’m not.  How funny is that?

Plus, as they say, it’s not the years; it’s the mileage!

:)

And, on the flip-side, it’s hard to believe that my mom had her first baby 35 years ago!!

So, what’s the big plan for the day?

Well, my inlaws are here this week, so my normal workload has been cut in half.  Claire is satisfied playing with them all day; she just checks in periodically to see if I’m still alive and kickin’.

There are some presents waiting on the dining room table for me to open, and Daddy told me that Claire has a birthday surprise for me. I can’t wait to see what that is!

We’re going to go swimming today, complete with a picnic lunch.  Then, I get to be pampered at the salon while I get my hair cut.  This evening, we’ll go out to eat for dinner, and we’ll top the evening off with a new episode of Lost.

That sounds like a day fit for a Birthday Girl…or in my case, the Birthday Old Lady.  ;)

And, for what it’s worth, birthdays put me in a good mood, so I don’t even feel like shaking my cane or yelling at anyone today…but if you could kindly refrain from stepping on my lawn, that would be awesome.  Thanks.  :)

Cute Thank You Card Idea

I’ve gotten such a great response from the Thank You Cards that Claire sent for her birthday presents that I just have to share!

This is a super-easy idea and I’ll be doing this (or a version of it) from now on.

During the party, I wanted to get a good group shot of the kids.  (I mentioned the Party People on a Couch in this post.) I wanted to use that group photo in a Thank You Photo Card.

The funniest part was trying to find the best shot to use!  In three of our five shots, at least one person was trying to escape.  In four different shots, at least two people weren’t smiling.  In most of them, at least one person was being a goofball.

I narrowed it down to this one.

Thank You Photo Card – November 30, 2008

I think every person looks good enough…and when you’re dealing with kids of this age-range “good enough” is as good as it’s going to get!  :)

So, after the party on Sunday (the 30th, Claire’s birthday), during Claire’s nap, I sorted through the digital photos and found the one I wanted to use.  I then went online to the Target Photo place and found a Thank You Card I liked (I think the one I chose was actually a “blank” version.  I can’t remember.  I looked at roughly 53 different cards.  Ha!).  I wrote all of the kids’ names in order on the card and sent it to print.  The only option I had, other than mail-delivery (which I didn’t want to do), was the one-hour option.  Thinking that was just a generic message, I chose it.  I’d go pick them up when they were done, on Monday, during Claire’s Young Preschooler Class.

Imagine my surprise when 30 minutes later I received an email telling me they were done!  Already!  I couldn’t believe it!  I grabbed my purse, ran downstairs and told my hubby that I’d be back in a few minutes.  Claire was still napping when I returned with the finished Thank You Cards.

On the back of each one, we (oh, who am I kidding…Claire is too little to really write out her Thank Yous yet, and her cursive is just not up to par!) wrote a personal message on a sticky note and attached it to the back of each photo card.  I addressed the envelopes and they went out with the Holiday Cards on December 1st.

And, on Claire’s copy of the Thank You Photo Card, I wrote everyone’s full names on the back (for posterity’s sake), and we have a nice easily-made memento of the party and nice reminder of who helped her celebrate her birthday.

For the record, I did NOT expect to have the Thank Yous done and sealed the afternoon of the party, but I’m not one to poke around in the mouth of a gift horse, so I ran with it!

Now, my friends think I’m extremely organized and also a touch insane.  I am organized, but not that organized.  It was purely luck.  For real.  Honestly, please stop looking at me that way; it makes me uncomfortable.  ;)

Any guesses as to how long the batteries will last?

So, I’m sitting here trying to BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! type.  I have a lot of ideas swirling around in my head and a ton of ideas in my BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! journal file saved on my computer.  Now would be a good BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! time to get them organized and get some writing pieces BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! completed.

Claire is playing BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! in my office.  I don’t want to wait BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! until her nap to get these writing pieces started.  Now would actually fit well into BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! my schedule.

She is playing with some of the gifts and cards she BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! received for her birthday.  She loves looking at all BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! of her beautiful birthday cards.

There is one card BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! in particular that she really likes.  It’s from one of her BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! uncles.  It’s a magical BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! card.  It is battery operated BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! and plays the sound of a magic wand, followed by a BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! princess speaking.

I’ll give you BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! three guesses BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! as to what the card says, and the first two don’t BRRRUMMM  CINDERELLA WISHES YOU A DAY OF DREAMS COME TRUE! count.

Party People on a Couch

We all had a great time at Claire’s Birthday Party!!  A huge thanks goes out to everyone who made this day so special for all of us!

I promise to get to “real” posts in the near future…honest!

In the meantime, here are some photos from The Big Day!

Claire chose Ariel™ for her Birthday Theme this year, and it was a big hit!  The look on her face when she saw me bring all the balloons up from their hiding place in the guest room was worth the hassle of trying to get them all in my car.

I love this picture!  She’s all tough with her tattoo, but girly with her fairy costume.  She’s eating her goodie bag goldfish while taking a birthday call on Momma’s cell phone.  She’s quite the multitasker these days.  ;)

Party Preparations

Guess what!?  Today, Claire turns THREE YEARS OLD!!  This morning, we’ll be hosting a party, and NONE of us can wait.

I have so much to say about my baby turning three, but all of those musings will have to wait!

We’ve got a party to set up!
We’ve got a party to get started!
We’ve got to party!

I promise to share more this week about all the fun and excitement, but in the meantime, here is a sneak peek.

Claire has no idea how sneaky we’ve been with the preparations, and I can’t wait to see her face!  Here is what we’ve been up to:

NaBloPoMo is easy when you have an extra blogger in the house.

Momma and Daddy are getting Claire a real “big girl bed” for her room for her birthday. We found the one we wanted at a Major Retailer and then decided to peruse Craigslist to see what we could see.

Imagine our surprise at finding the exact bed for not even 1/3 of the cost, AND the sellers were including a bookshelf for free. Sweet!

My hubby went to check it out, and it was perfect. It was in excellent condition and really was the exact one we were looking at buying new. Needless to say, we were happy to take the pieces off their hands for less than we’d budgeted.

To get all the pieces home in his car, he had to dismantle the shelving unit, and the bed barely fit, but he made it! For the last few weeks, he’s been working on getting the bookshelf back together and making a bedrail (from our old crib parts) for the bed.

We found an awesome deal on a brand-new twin mattress, so we’re all set!

This last weekend, I helped him move the bed back out to the garage so that he can put the finishing touches on it. Claire knows that “Daddy’s project” is in the garage, which is why we’ve been parking in the driveway the last couple of days, but she has no idea what’s in store. I can’t wait to see her face.

Just seeing how excited she was about the bookshelf when we brought it up to Momma’s office on Sunday was awesome. She was thrilled.

Those are her words. She uses, “I need to type my blog first!” as an excuse to not do things promptly. And, how can you argue with that? I mean, blogging is important…especially during NaBloPoMo! ;)

Today is Day 26 of 30 in the NaBloPoMo Challenge! Check it out!

How many days until…

Thanksgiving?  Three! (as in this week!)

Claire’s Third Birthday?  Six! (as in less than a week!)

The Holiday Letters go out with a December 1st Postmark?  Seven! (as in a week exactly!)

And then the ball starts rolling so fast that it won’t stop until it drops in Times Square on the 31st of December (or a couple hours later…such is life here in the Mountain Time Zone…).

Things are starting to move at a breakneck speed. Every day, we have packages arriving that need to be sorted by elves: Birthday ones in one pile and Christmas ones in another. Mixed in are packages that have final destinations across the country. Those packages need to be undone, wrapped, packaged and shipped. Then, we’ll have guests arriving by land and by air. Meals and activities are being planned. And, I’m in the process of organizing Santa’s schedule so that his visit can be timed like clockwork.

Like everyone else, I’m dealing with all of these things in addition to my other duties. But you know what? I’m not stressed. Not only am I thinking positive thoughts and vibrating with a positive energy, I’ve got my To Do List under control.

All of this excitement energizes me!  The power to multitask and get things done intoxicates me!  Muuuuu-ah-ah-ah.

*ahem*
But I digress…

Thanksgiving is going to be a breeze this year. This year, it’s just the three of us, and I’m so excited! We’re breaking from tradition a little bit and will be trying out new recipes. We’ll do our signature ham for our guests in December, and in the meantime, I’m finding new recipes to try on Thanksgiving. Speaking of which, The Noble Pig has a pumpkin cake recipe that I’m dying to try!!

The gifts for The Birthday Girl are purchased and need to be assembled. This won’t be too difficult and will just take time. We’re limited to naptime to do this covert operation, but we’re skilled at this maneuver.

The Birthday Girl Party Invites went out, and the cake is ordered, and the goodie bags are waiting to be filled with various Birthday Girlie Items. I just need to pick up the balloons and the cake the day before The Big Day, and we’re set!

After the Thanksgiving Meal is cleared, we can really focus on the decorations for that affair.

The Holiday Letter Photos are shot, printed, and tucked inside Holiday Letters that are composed, printed, prettied-up and stuffed into envelopes that are addressed. We just have to add Claire’s Three Year Photo, and the appointment for that photo shoot is already made! Stamping and sealing should be a quick and fun activity, and we’re right on schedule for my December 1st Deadline!

The Holiday Gift Lists are made and checked twice. As soon as the last package arrives, joining the things we purchased locally, we’ll get them wrapped, boxed up and ready for distribution.

Thanksgiving passes the baton to Birthday who passes the torch to Christmas, and then the Guest Room (aka The Gift Storage Room) will be livable again, just in time for our guests to arrive. After the Birthday Party, we’ll put up the tree, set out the presents, and enjoy the ride.

And then, as soon as January gets here, I can start working on our Valentines.

Just kidding!

Kinda…

;)

The Build-a-Bear Birthday Party

On Sunday, one of Claire’s little girl-friends had a birthday party. We were invited to a local Build-a-Bear Workshop to help her celebrate. It was a great idea for a party!

Claire was extremely excited to go to this store, as she’d never been inside one yet. (Years ago, I had gone with some friends, but I hadn’t been in one recently.) Before we got to the store, I’d tried to explain to Claire what we would be doing, but I could tell she didn’t really understand.

No worries.
She’ll figure it out when we get there.

Or so I thought…

As soon as we walked in, she was overwhelmed. Our friends had paid for a special birthday package that included stuffed animals for each attendee. And, with the birthday package, each child was able to choose from a ton of different stuffed creatures on the display wall. We weren’t going to be doing voice-boxes or clothing, which are features you can add on if you choose. Honestly, just the stuffed creature was a fabulous and generous treat!

So, we told Claire to pick which one she wanted to make, and we made our way down the display wall. She kept trying to grab the finished example off of the wall. “I want that one!” she’d shriek with joy as she grabbed a hold of whichever precious creature had her attention. She wanted nothing to do with its empty equivalent in the bin below it.

“Well, sweetie, that’s a great choice!” I’d say, as I tried to wrangle the stuffed example toy away from her and hand her the empty shell.

“Nooooooooo! I don’t want that!” she’d scream, shoving the limp, lifeless hide away from her. “I want that one!” she’d beg, pointing to the stuffing-filled finished product.

I tried explaining that we would be filling it with stuffing. It will look like the one on the wall when we were finished! Honest…it will!

She thought I was insane. How can that useless and boring piece of faux fur even compare to the wonderful, glorious stuffed toy on the wall? And, why are you pointing to those things and asking me to choose if you won’t let me take the one I want? What kind of trick is this?

*sigh*

Claire wasn’t the only one who didn’t get it. Other confused little girls in our party were distraught over the horribly inadequate choices we were forcing them to make.

But, it didn’t take long for the Party Coordinator to get the party started, and soon, things were on a roll.

If you’ve ever been to a Build-a-Bear Workshop, you know that you put a little heart into each animal. Well, for the Birthday Girl, they had an added bonus. Each child picked two hearts. The Party Coordinator then had the kids take one of their hearts, kiss it and make a Birthday Wish for the Birthday Girl. Then all of those hearts were sewn into her bear. The remaining heart was put into their own stuffed animal.

Then the lifeless shells were stuffed with fluff. Finally, the creatures started to take shape, and the party goers understood that we weren’t completely crazy.

In fact, they were ecstatic.

A little word of warning, though…the stuffing of the fluff machine nearly scared the stuffing right out of Claire! It’s rather loud, and as soon as that thing turned on, she shot over to me in a flash. When it was her turn to stuff her animal, she held my hand, and insisted that I be right there to help her, which wasn’t a problem, but it wasn’t something I’d expected to be an issue.

After the stuffing of the animals, the kids were able to “wash” their creatures at the Washing Station (no water is involved, but there is air that shoots out of “sprayers”)…pretty cool! Then, from there, the girls went to the Cardboard House Station and got to color houses for their new best friends.

So, what did Claire finally choose?

After manhandling practically each and every toy, she finally decided on a hot-pink leopard, which she named Jasper. Yes, we have a real Jasper here…and now he has a sister.

“This one is a girl-Jasper, Momma!”
Obviously. ;)

After the party, they were both ready for a nap! Here they are sound asleep.

All in all, it was a wonderful idea for a party. It is one that I may actually consider doing for one of Claire’s birthday parties in the future, because she had so much fun! Plus, the store handles the decorating, the clean-up, and how can you not have a good time?

Well…once you figure out that you won’t be forced to play with an empty shell of a creature, the more fun you’ll have! ;)

Note: This is not an official review of the store. This is purely real life turning itself into blog fodder. ;)

Tuesday Randomonium

Today feels like a Monday, but it’s really a Tuesday.  When I worked a “real job,” that was always challenging.  Now that I work a “really cool job,” it’s just another day.  ;)

But, in honor of a Tuesday that feels like a Monday, here are some random thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head:

~*~

There is a School of Massage Therapy literally minutes from my home that offers full-on hour-long massages for dirt cheap on the weekends.  This type of thing has been going on for years, and I had no idea.  Why am I just finding this out now?  Since my hubby was on a boys only camping weekend, I was able to have the babysitter come play with Claire on Sunday, and I went to try it out.  With the special $10-off coupon my hubby found for me in the mail, my massage was a whopping $15.  (They are running this deal for three weekends in a row.)  Even a bad massage is worth $15.  I spend $15 walking across the parking lot at Target.  Needless to say, “Wayne” did an excellent job, and it was worth every penny.

I’m getting a massage next weekend too, and I’d like to see you stop me.

~*~

Speaking of pennies, we’ve started going to a different grocery store.  It’s one that is just a block or two  farther from our house than the one we normally go to, and it’s nothing to write home about on the store-maintenance side of things, but the groceries are significantly cheaper.  The last time I’d been in that store was before I was pregnant with Claire, so walking through the aisles was like a blast from the past.  It is, of course, set up completely differently than the one we have been going to.

I hate the way the newer store is designed.  The placement of items makes no sense to me.  But, I digress…

I forget why we stopped going to the older store, but I think it’s because the new fancy one opened up, and it was technically closer.

But, the best thing about this store?  Besides the lower prices, excellent fruit and vegetable selection, and having a layout that actually makes sense?

Penny Pony Rides.

Yes.  You can ride the automated pony at the front of the store for a PENNY.  I didn’t think you could do anything for a penny anymore.  For real.  It’s only a penny, and the ride actually lasts for a decent amount of time.

Claire loved it.
Momma loved finding an awesome “please be good in the store” bargaining tool.

In fact, Claire was having so much fun riding the pony that not one, but two elderly people stopped to give us pennies!  I let Claire take an extra ride and then we left a penny on top of the machine for the next lucky kid who’d been really good at the store.

I found out from another mom in the Mom’s Club that the bakery in this store also offers free cookies.  I must have zoomed through there too quickly to notice that when I was there.

Please don’t tell Claire the bakery offers free cookies.  I mean, cookies and a pony ride?  The poor thing may keel over in a joy-induced coma.  Then again, that may make it easier for me to put her in her car seat:)

~*~

Speaking of the Mom’s Club, I got the calendar of events for the month over the weekend.  I got all of them transferred into my calendar.  I love our Mom’s Club because there is something we can do every day of the week (the work week…the weekends are free), if we so choose.  I try to leave time to do non-Mom’s Club related things too, but it’s hard when everything looks so good.

Some months are more interesting than others, and September’s events line-up looks to be pretty exciting.  It was hard to find a free day here and there!  I found myself feeling very overwhelmed with our full schedule and then had to remind myself that there is something surreal about nearly having a panic attack caused by the thought of playing outside in a park or socializing with humans every day of the week.  Luckily, my momentary lapse in rationality only lasted a split second (okay, maybe three seconds), and it ended just as quickly as it came.

And to think I was worried I wouldn’t find anything productive and fun to do with Claire when I quit my job.

~*~

Speaking of fun, I think we’ve figured out a theme for Claire’s birthday party this year.  (And by we, I mean me and the people in my head…you can imagine how much my husband enjoys planning birthday parties.  For small children.  Three months in advance.  If ever.)

Claire is really into the Disney Princesses™, and there are oodles and gobs of party packs surrounding that theme.  But, then I pictured her poor little boy-friends sitting under pink streamers with little sparkly tiaras on their heads, clutching their little party-favor pink princess purses.  (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

So, I shifted the plan a little and will focus on The Little Mermaid.  We’ll have plenty of time in the future to have an all-girls party.  Claire is totally smitten with Ariel, and the last time I checked Flounder and Sebastian weren’t too girly.  ;)

Did it rhyme with snow?

April Birthday Snow

Conversation we had earlier today, before my hubby left for work.

Me: “What did you really want for your birthday? Because I think they got it wrong.”

Him: “What?”

Me: “Did you want to go to a show? Did you want a new hoe?”

Him: “What?”

Me: “Did you want something for your toe? Or just something with a bow?”

Him: “What?”

Me: “Because they sent you snow.”

Him: “Oh! Sorry, I’m a little slow.”

See? He’s not too old to play rhyming games! ;)

Happy Birthday, Babe!
