Check out the new look!

This weekend, we made some changes here at The Casual Perfectionist.

Just what did we do?

I totally dig lists, so here’s a little list:

  • We upgraded some of the backend editor stuff.
  • We added a different anti-spam feature to the comment section.
  • We changed the header.
  • We moved around the layout.
  • We implemented a new searching feature.

Why did we do this?

It’s always good to upgrade the backend stuff, but we just hadn’t had the time to do it.  Things are a little more complicated when you have your own domain name, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Luckily, my hubby is really good at understanding all of this technical mumbo-jumbo.  The downside to all that is that I need his help and can’t do the trickier things myself whenever it strikes my fancy.  The upside to that is I don’t have to deal with change.  ;)

And, since he was going to be tinkering around in the code, I told him that I was being eaten alive by spambots.  Their weapon of choice appears to include h0tmail email addresses.  I’d had to put a ban on comments from h0tmail email addresses, which would dump all of those into a moderation queue.  At times, I would be bombarded with 1,500+ comments an hour.  AN HOUR.  I don’t have the time to sift through all of that, and I hated the fact that real people with legitimate h0tmail addresses were getting lost in the shuffle.

So, we found a really cool anti-spam program to add to the comments section of the blog.  It requires the commenter to type in a word that appears in the comment field.  This proves that the commenter is indeed human and not a spambot.

Yes, it’s one extra hoop my readers need to jump through to comment, and I apologize for that.  But, the alternative just wasn’t an option anymore.  And, I tested it out, and the word seems to be pretty easy to see.  I comment on some blogs that use a different version of this, and I feel like I’m in the middle of a vision test.  Some of the lines are so squiggly or the characters so distorted that I feel like I’m squinting and then that makes me feel old.  ;)

So, hopefully the version I chose will be pretty easy to use.

Note:  If you have tried to comment on this blog in the past, and you have a h0tmail address, and your comment never showed up, please try it again!  I think it will work this time!

Why did I change the header, and why isn’t it a shadow portrait?

I love shadow portraits, and odds are I’ll be doing more of them.  I also wanted a header that would represent the three of us: Momma, Daddy and Claire.  But, when Claire and I were messing around one day taking pictures of ourselves, two pictures jumped out at me.  They totally capture who we are, and I love them.  I asked Daddy if it was okay if he wasn’t truly represented in the header this time, and he said he was fine with that.

When we decided to make the changes to the blog, I wanted to use one of these two pictures:

This is one of the pictures.

This is one of the pictures.

This is another picture.

This is another picture.

It was hard to decide between the two, but we ultimately chose the one where you can see me smiling and Claire saying “Cheese!”  Claire is using a random piece off of a spinning-top as her camera.  (It’s one of those toys where you wind up the spinning-top and then release it with the handle to send it shooting across the room.  She uses the handle portion as her camera.  Go figure.)  She’s taking our picture as I’m taking our picture.  I love it.  It keeps the veil of anonymity on, yet it shows who we are.

One of these days, I’ll take some pictures of the three of us playing so that Daddy can be included.  (He got her the little green toy, so he is with us in spirit in the picture.)

Why did I switch back to two columns?

In the grand scheme of things, layout is just a preference.  I’d had the three column site for over a year, and I loved it.  But, every once in a while, I’d look at it and pretend to be an observer and I realized that so many words in such a small real-estate could be overwhelming.  So, when we made these changes, I went back to the two column version.  If you can’t find something you want, just keep scrolling, or look in the tabs at the top.  (And, yes, Dory from Finding Nemo just popped into my head, only now she’s singing, “Just keep scrolling!  Just keep scrolling!  Just keep scrolling!”)  ;)

I do have it set so that if your monitor or browser window is small, it shifts the columns around to find the best fit.  And, the geeky part of my brain thinks that’s pretty cool.

What other features have changed?

I just discovered that the way you can search through older things on the site is really cool now.  At the top of the blog, on the main page, under the header and tabs and right above the top post, you’ll see a link that says, “Older: Page 1 of 64.”

Click on “Older.”

Isn’t that the coolest thing?  It brings up a sliding tool that allows you to search back through the dates.  And, this option stays at the top of your browser window as you scroll down, so you’ll always have easy access to it.  You can also click on “trim” and it will shorten all the entries to just show the titles and dates of publication.  (Untrim puts it back the way it was.)

I’m such a sucker for flair.  I totally love flair.  Ooooh.  Pretty.  ;)

So, feel free to poke around.  If you find something that appears to be goofy, shoot me an email or leave a comment.  So far, everything seems to be working pretty well.  As always, the site looks better in FireFox (as opposed to Internet Explorer)…and I haven’t used IE for so long…but I tested some of it and things appear to be working over there as well.  (And, if you haven’t upgraded to FireFox, I highly suggest it.  I balked at making the change and then couldn’t believe I waited so long.)  :)

If you read my blog in a FeedReader you shouldn’t notice any difference at all.  But, you won’t be able to see the new header or features, so pop on over to check it out!

And, feel free to check out the new comment feature!  Leave a comment!  I’d love to hear what you think!

Until the leaves fall…

Autumn is officially here!  Fall is in the air!  This is my absolute favorite season of the year.  Because we’re on the cusp, the temps have been rallying, and the leaves haven’t started falling yet.

But, they will.
The cool crispness will prevail.
The colors will explode.
I can’t wait.

It’s times like these when I have the urge to change my header, but Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated yet.  There are no crunchy leaves on the ground to capture our Shadow Portrait!

Never fear!  Last year’s photo to the rescue!

Shadow Portrait in the leaves

The header is the Autumn Shadow Portrait we took last year.  I love it.  It shows Daddy, Momma and Claire, and you can read about it, and all the other Shadow Portraits, here. And, until we can make a new one for this year, it adorns my blog.

If you’re reading this via a Feed Reader, feel free to pop on over and check it out!

New Shadow Portrait

Today, Claire, Momma and Daddy were able to go to a nearby nature center that specializes in butterflies. While there, we took some new shadow portraits!

New Shadow Portrait

And, here’s the one we chose for the blog header! (It’s cropped on the header, but you can click on the above photo to see more detail. Clicking a second time will enlarge it even more.)

You can see Claire (and her baby-doll, Daisy), Momma and Daddy. We were hoping one of the thousands of butterflies would grace our photo with her presence, but it wasn’t meant to be. (And, I’m not good enough in my skills to make it look like one did.)

Butterfly or not, I love it! I love the detail, and the different shadows created by the three of us, the plants below us and the plants above us. I love how it captures our personalities…and you can’t even see our faces.

And, we tried to get more glorious color in the frame, but the sun wasn’t at the right angle yet. We’re all about reality here…so what you see is what you get.

So, here is the new header…until the three of us find something else that strikes our fancy. :)

I decided to change the header to match the season. Normally, we do some sort of Shadow Portrait to capture the essence of the three of us, but we opted for something a little different this time!

Above, you’ll see the feet of Claire, Momma and Daddy all cooling off in the pool. (If you read this via a FeedReader of some sort, feel free to click on over and check it out!)

I’ve made the full version of this photo my desktop photo on my computer. Just looking at it makes me feel cooler already. ;)

The best of both worlds: Iris & Shadow Portraits

So, the iris are blooming in the backyard, and I got some really good photos of them yesterday. I was so inspired by them that I made this photo the background on my computer screen. My favorite colors are represented, and coupled with the oranges and yellows, they really pop.

This picture, quite simply, makes me very happy.

:)

I had the urge to make this the new header on the blog, but I really wanted to stick with the “theme” I have going with the shadow portraits in the header. But, try as I might, I could not figure out a good way to get our three shadows in the photo with the iris. They are in a shady spot of the backyard. The sunlight you see in the photo just isn’t conducive to producing the desired look that I want in my shadow portraits.

What to do…what to do?

Then, as I was looking at a photo of the Spring Shadow Portraits we took against the backdrop of my computer screen, I had an idea:

So, here it is! You can see the shadow portrait from the previous header and the iris.

It’s the best of both worlds!

Spring Shadow Portrait 2008

Claire and I went exploring in the yard yesterday while Daddy worked on a project. In our adventures, we found many of the flowers have started to bloom!

When we ventured onto the rocks on the west side of the house, imagine my surprise in finding the sun at just the right angle to include these awesome spring colors in a shadow portrait!

I ran back into the house, grabbed the camera and made Daddy take a break from his project. He joined us in the sun, and we were able to create our Spring Shadow Portrait 2008 to be used for the blog header.

You can click on each photo to enlarge.

Spring Shadow Portrait

In order, you’ll see the shadows of Claire (with Puppy), Momma and Daddy, captured with the Grape Hyacinth and Holly.

Grape Hyacinth

This mixture of blue and purple is one of my all-time favorites.

Holly

I love the bright yellow!

Creating shadow portraits is an on-going theme here at The Casual Perfectionist. I’ve tried to represent the different seasons with various scenes. (Well, my impatience with the recent snow-storms did throw an exception into the mix…and those tulips are almost ready to bloom!) You can read about the other shadow portraits I’ve used as headers by checking out this category.

Enjoy!

Last Year’s Tulips

I’m so tired of snow. I really wanted to post a Pretty Spring Shadow Portrait of the three of us as the blog header, but I haven’t had a chance to take one yet. The tulips are still hiding underground, but their green leaves are starting to make an appearance. It shouldn’t be much longer. As soon as they burst forth in glorious color (wow, that sounds so dramatic), I’ll try to capture them within a shadow portrait.

But, I’m impatient.
I’m tired of the snow…in real life and on my blog.

So, I changed the header! Until the tulips bloom for real, here is a picture of last year’s tulips.

Spring makes me happy.

Winter Portrait

As you can see, I’ve changed the header on the blog again! It snowed this weekend, and the weather was just perfect to go out into the backyard and take some snow shadow portraits!

Snow Shadow Portrait

I love this picture! As always, you can click on the above photo a couple times to see it in more detail. (Feel free to check out the Custom Image Header category to see the other shadow portraits we’ve done…)

I’m the kind of person who loves the changing of the seasons. Yes, I’ll complain about the blazing heat of summer or the bitter cold of winter, but I love the differences each season brings.

For this portrait, we are standing in Momma, Claire and Daddy order. You can see the skeleton of one of the apple trees, with a few vibrant red apples clinging on to the branch, refusing to admit that winter is here. You can see the green boughs of the junipers peeking out from under a blanket of fresh snow.

Change is in the air, and I can’t wait to see what this winter brings!

Autumn Portrait

I’ve changed the header on the blog to coincide with the changing of the seasons. I’m a sucker for playing in the leaves in the backyard, and we love taking shadow portraits. This one, in particular, was a lot of fun. This is, of course, one of about 237 we took. ;) For pictures, and in general, I always hold Claire between us, in my left arm. This time, she kept trying to lean back on Daddy’s shoulder, which is great for regular pictures, but makes an oddly shaped Daddy and Claire blob on a shadow portrait.

As soon as I switched her to my other arm, this picture emerged, and we were amazed at how much it looks like all of us! All of our mannerisms and personalities are captured in this particular shadow portrait. Daddy is concentrating on taking the picture; I have my head cocked to one side, and you can see Claire’s profile as she’s looking at Puppy. I love it!

Shadow Portrait in the leaves

So, when the snow flies, we’ll try our hand at some snow shadow portraits. In the meantime, enjoy this autumn portrait!

Change is in the air

Well, I’ve been working on a site redesign for a while. My hubby graciously set up a testing site for me, and I’ve been poking around and playing around with different themes. I think I’ve settled on one, and we’ll try it out for a while!

Please be patient while I work out any bugs!

Shadow Portrait in the sand

The current header (seen above) is a dual-self-portrait taken by my husband while we were exploring The Great Sand Dunes National Park a few years ago. You can’t tell from the picture, but Fall was just around the corner, and we were at the top of one of the dunes. We’ve taken self-portraits like these in many locations and will continue to do so. Don’t be surprised if you see more like this in the future!
