Picture of the Day: Rushing

I love this photo, because it captures the rush toward the holidays:  the preparation of the gifts, the menus, the travel arrangements.  It also helps encapsulate the excitement Claire feels about Santa’s visit.

Luckily, this year’s holiday preparations haven’t been as hectic as they have been exciting.  And, either way, the above photo captures that feeling for me.

In previous years, my hubby and I have loaded the car and dodged blizzards to see far-away relatives.  Last year, we put an end to that adventurous chapter in our lives and decided to stay home for the holidays.  The relatives who could came to us, and it was awesome.  The new traditions we started with Claire were so much fun, and our little family of three are really looking forward to spending this week with the relatives brave enough to dodge blizzards again this year.

So, because we’ll have a house-full (we don’t call this place a Hotel for nuthin’!), I’ll be posting fun photos rather than writing lengthy posts.

And, speaking of photos, can you tell what the above one is?  Check back tomorrow for the answer!

The Elf winked at me, so it’s cool…

Last Thursday, Claire and I went to visit Santa for the very first time.  You can read about why we haven’t gone in the past by clicking here. This year, I roped our Moms’ Club members into joining me in line.  I thought that this way, even if Claire didn’t want to sit on the big guy’s lap, at least we’d have a fun day at the Mall with our friends.

All week, in preparation for our little field trip, Claire and I talked about Santa.  We talked about how some kids are scared to sit on his lap, and that’s okay.  We talked about how Momma would be right there, and it would be just fine for her to sit on his lap and tell him what she wanted for Christmas.  I played it up as super-exciting, but not big deal, which is a tightrope I’ve learned to walk pretty well these days.

The day arrived, and Claire insisted on wearing her party dress, AND her sparkly shoes.  “Santa will love my sparkly shoes!” she kept shouting as she ran around like a crazy person.

As we pull into the Mall parking lot, Claire keeps seeing random strangers walking toward the building.  “Is that Santa?  I don’t think that’s Santa.  I wonder if Santa is here already, Momma?  Is he here already?” she’d ask with such excitement that it was hard to contain my own excitement.

“I bet Santa is already in there!  I bet he’s getting ready to talk to the children now!  This is going to be so much fun!”  I told her, but she was too excited to really pay attention to my answer.

As we walked through the Mall and found our friends, I reminded her that it was okay to be a little scared of Santa.  She told me she wasn’t afraid, and she couldn’t wait to meet him.  I was hoping that was the case.

Now, call me a cheater or a scrooge, but I had no desire to pay an inflated price on the “Santa and Me” portraits, or whatever they call them, at the mall.  I’d asked one of my friends who had gone to this particular location in the past if personal cameras were allowed, and she assured me that they were.

When we get there, I see the signs that indicate where to line up, and on the sign is a message that says, basically, “We respectfully ask that you not take personal photographs.”  Hmpf.  I’m a rule-follower.  I usually follow rules to the T.  (Even though there isn’t a T in Rules, but I digress.)  The last thing I want to do is be tossed out of the Santa Line for taking photos with my digital camera…but still!  I don’t want to pay their prices, and unless the rules have changed, personal photos were allowed last year and every previous year.  I mean, technically the sign didn’t say it was prohibited…just that it was being respectfully asked of us, and if given a chance, I may have to respectfully decline;)

I can see other children with Santa, and their parents have digital cameras, so I decide to go with the flow.  I put the camera around my neck, fully intending to take photos up to that point and then play it by ear.

I took some cute photos of Claire and her friends waiting in line and petting the stuffed reindeer and looking at all of the holiday lights.  As the line winds around through the evergreens, we’re almost to the end!  It’s almost our turn!  Claire is getting more and more excited about seeing Santa, and I’m a mixed bag of emotions:  Will she do it?  Can I take pictures of it?  Will either of us cause a scene?

As we get to the front of the line, a nice Elf starts to check us in.  She asks if we’d like to have a photo package today.  I couldn’t lie to her.  She had pointy ears…and rosy cheeks…and a cute green hat.

“No,” I said sheepishly.  “I’m not interested in the photo packages.”

She looked at the camera around my neck and said with a fake “pretend I’m not telling you to break the rules or I’ll lose my job” smile and said, “Well, you’re not obligated to actually buy any of the photos we take.”  And she winked at me!

Then, she continued.  “But, if you allow us to take photos, no one will care if you snap a couple with your own camera.”  And she winked at me again!

So, I smiled at her for the purpose of the security cameras and whispered between clenched, smiling teeth, “So, what you’re telling me is if I agree to the look at the photo packages, I can take photos with my own camera, but I’m not obligated to buy any of the ones you take?”

“That’s right!” she said with a smile…and another wink!  Then she added something about having kids in grad school and not wanting to lose her job, but being obligated to tell me company policy.  She was good.  She could have been a ventriloquist, because to the untrained eye, she was just a smiley happy elf wishing us all good cheer.

“All right!” I said.  “You convinced me.  I’d love to see your photo packages!”

So, the Elf indicated to the photographer that she had another live one, and he tried desperately to get Claire to smile for the camera.

Claire, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with that silly-dressed man behind the camera.  She was there to see the big guy.  She hopped up on his lap and proceeded to tell him in great detail what she wanted for Christmas.  For weeks, she’s been saying she wanted a Christmas Tree, and since we put that up last week, she’s set her sights on something different.  (I won’t give it away, but it rhymes with Dorbie Ball.)

As she’s talking to Santa, I’m clicking as many photos as I can before the Winking Elf changes her mind.  That poor camera man tried everything, and Claire kept giving him the most annoyed “please let me talk to the one in charge” looks!  I couldn’t wait to see what they got on film.

I finally put him out of his misery and told them I thought we were done.  I didn’t want to waste any more of their time, especially since I wasn’t going to be buying any photos.  (I kept that last part to myself…)

Claire hopped off Santa’s lap and then proceeded to tell me all about it!  She’d talked to him!  She’d told him what she wanted!  She wasn’t scared, Momma!

After a few minutes, our photos were ready to view on the computer monitors, and I couldn’t help but laugh.  Thank goodness I wasn’t relying on these photos!  They were a riot!  The first one showed Claire scowling at the photographer.  The second one had her eyes closed, and the last one was the biggest frown I’ve ever seen!  I actually laughed out loud.  She’d done it!  She’d not only had a great time, but she’d given me the total excuse to not buy any of their photos!

So what about the ones I took?

You can see that she’s mid-sentence, but already giving the photographer the eye.  She’s starting to get a little perturbed by the photographer for interrupting her discussion with Santa.  And, trust me, she’s not as nervous as she looks in this picture.  I was just glad she didn’t burst into tears and that I didn’t get tossed out for taking my own photos.

But, I knew it would be fine.  The Elf winked at me…honest.  ;)

How many snowmen can you punch?

Well, now that my self-imposed December 1st Postmark Deadline for our Holiday Letters has come and gone, and most everyone has received them, I’m going to share some steps of The Holiday Letter Project 2008.

This year, we sent 100 letters. It didn’t take me long to address the envelopes. Rather than fight with my printer, I wrote them out by hand. It wasn’t really that tedious and didn’t take me long to do.

I looked at the fancy holiday papers, and they were a little too expensive for my liking, so rather than go that route, I chose to print our letter on light blue paper and then used a snowman punch to make it festive.

Click photos to enlarge.

Snowman Punch

After composing and printing one letter on white paper, I signed it with our names. I then ran the copies through my laser printer onto the blue. I then used the Snowman Punch to punch one snowman, and then flipped it over to punch out the other snowman.

In action

I used two sheets of paper at once, so I actually punched out two snowmen at the same time.

Something about typing “punch out the snowman” makes me laugh. It wasn’t nearly as violent as it appears on paper. ;)

After all the snowmen were punched out, (Ha! There it is again!) I started folding.

I set up a box I had with my envelopes, folded letters, photos, and the printed letters. I kept those in a folder with my address list. This was my Holiday Letter Project Command Center, and it was nice to be mobile and still have all my things in one place.

Project Command Center

This way, I could easily work on my project in my office or the kitchen or the dining room, and I could start and stop my project without going completely crazy.

When I was done folding, it was time to stuff the envelopes. Inside each letter was tucked a photo. As you remember, here is the one we chose:

I got self-adhesive envelopes so the sealing part of the project would be super-quick and easy. Some people also received a photo from Claire’s 3rd Birthday. Those envelopes were set aside and finished after we had her photo taken, later than the rest, but still before my little deadline.

Self-adhesive envelopes, coupled with self-adhesive stamps made this holiday season bright! :)

Then, I decided to use the little snowmen that we’d punched out (brutally, and without cause…ha!) as stickers on the back of the envelopes.

This is what you need for this part of the project.

This is what you need for this part of the project.

All you do is put the little snowman on the mailing tape (or packing tape, or whatever you call this type of clear tape).

Then, you cut him off with the scissors and affix it to the back of the sealed envelope.

A Snowman Sticker that is not really a sticker, but kinda is...

And, there you have it!

Now, if you were paying attention, you’ve probably already done the math in your head. Each of the 100 sheets yields 2 snowmen. One of the snowmen was then used on the back of the envelope, leaving an extra 100 snowmen.

100 Little Snowmen

100 Little Snowmen

Claire loves these little guys. Every week, I take a few out of the box, and she gets to play with a fresh new batch. We write names on them and color them and then put them in all kinds of precarious situations. But, for the record, not one of them has been punched out since. ;)

Day Nine – Held Hostage

Yes, the title of this post is dramatic, but it’s the truth.  It is what it is.  I’m being held hostage, and today is Day Nine.

It started out with the best of intentions.  I decided to walk through the Holiday Aisle at Target one day.  It was a Monday.  Claire was in her Young Preschoolers Class, and it was the perfect time to pick some things up and scratch them off of Santa’s List.

Candy canes?  Check!

What else…what else?

Oh, look!  A Christmas Countdown Calendar!  How perfect!  This would be something fun that Claire and I could do every morning.  Find the day, open it up, see the picture and eat the little chocolate candy.

Awesome!

So, the calendar and my other purchases were hidden downstairs with the rest of the holiday loot.

It wasn’t until the afternoon of December 1st that I remembered I had the Countdown Calendar!  I’d been chatting with one of my friends online, and she mentioned something that triggered my memory.  How could I forget!  Right after Claire’s nap, I got out the Calendar, and we found the little square marked “1″ and opened it up.

Claire was thrilled.

I let her eat the teeny tiny square of chocolate with the little picture imprinted on it.

She was beside herself.

And, then she wanted to open up the next one.  TWO comes after ONE!  Let’s open that one!

Uh, no.  I mean, yes.  Two comes after One, but we have to open it up on December 2nd. Tomorrow. We already opened up the one for today.

So?
Let’s open up Number Two Right Now!
What about now?
Or now?
Could we pretend that today is tomorrow and open up the next one now?
But, there’s chocolate in there!
Can we open it now?
Please, Momma, may we open up the next one!?

Such a polite little beggar.  But, the answer was still no.  Until the next day, in which she got to open up the next little door, and the begging started once again.

And, so began my captivity.
We’ve suffered through nine days.
Today is Day Nine.
ALL DAY.
It is NOT Day Ten.
Tomorrow is Day Ten.
No, we may not open up the next little box.

My husband got a kick out of my predicament…until our captor turned her sights on him.  That’s when he looked at the back of the box and told me that a serving size was listed as 12 pieces.

Thanks, but you’re not helping!  ;)

One a day!  That’s the joy of the Countdown Calendar.
Can’t you feel the joy?
:)

In all honesty, the irony of a calendar causing such frustration to a perfectionist who totally digs calendars is not lost on me, and that does bring me some joy…it’s twisted logic, but it is joy.  :)

I was talking to my sister-in-law the other day on the phone and told her what was happening.  I told her how I’d thought it was such a good idea!  A little countdown calendar to make the holidays fun!

Wrong!
This was not what I had expected!!

She laughed and said that her childhood was full of memories of the countdown calendar and how she and her brothers would not only beg to open more than one door a day, but they would fight over who could open up the next window and who would eat the candy this time.  So, it was good to hear that other parents have suffered before me and that I’m not alone.

I’ll tell you one thing, though.  The Countdown Calendar is working.  I can’t wait for the 25th to get here.  In fact, it can’t get here soon enough.  ;)

Will it always be this easy?

“So, Claire…what do you want for Christmas this year?”

“A Christmas tree!”

And, this has been her answer consistently…and I can’t wait to see what she tells Santa when we see him in a couple of weeks, and I can’t wait to see his reaction.

After her birthday tomorrow, we’ll put the tree up, so maybe she’ll come up with a different gift idea then?

Either way, it looks like she’s going to be easy to please this year! ;)

Today is Day 29 of 30 in the NaBloPoMo Challenge! One more day to go!

How many days until…

Thanksgiving?  Three! (as in this week!)

Claire’s Third Birthday?  Six! (as in less than a week!)

The Holiday Letters go out with a December 1st Postmark?  Seven! (as in a week exactly!)

And then the ball starts rolling so fast that it won’t stop until it drops in Times Square on the 31st of December (or a couple hours later…such is life here in the Mountain Time Zone…).

Things are starting to move at a breakneck speed. Every day, we have packages arriving that need to be sorted by elves: Birthday ones in one pile and Christmas ones in another. Mixed in are packages that have final destinations across the country. Those packages need to be undone, wrapped, packaged and shipped. Then, we’ll have guests arriving by land and by air. Meals and activities are being planned. And, I’m in the process of organizing Santa’s schedule so that his visit can be timed like clockwork.

Like everyone else, I’m dealing with all of these things in addition to my other duties. But you know what? I’m not stressed. Not only am I thinking positive thoughts and vibrating with a positive energy, I’ve got my To Do List under control.

All of this excitement energizes me!  The power to multitask and get things done intoxicates me!  Muuuuu-ah-ah-ah.

*ahem*
But I digress…

Thanksgiving is going to be a breeze this year. This year, it’s just the three of us, and I’m so excited! We’re breaking from tradition a little bit and will be trying out new recipes. We’ll do our signature ham for our guests in December, and in the meantime, I’m finding new recipes to try on Thanksgiving. Speaking of which, The Noble Pig has a pumpkin cake recipe that I’m dying to try!!

The gifts for The Birthday Girl are purchased and need to be assembled. This won’t be too difficult and will just take time. We’re limited to naptime to do this covert operation, but we’re skilled at this maneuver.

The Birthday Girl Party Invites went out, and the cake is ordered, and the goodie bags are waiting to be filled with various Birthday Girlie Items. I just need to pick up the balloons and the cake the day before The Big Day, and we’re set!

After the Thanksgiving Meal is cleared, we can really focus on the decorations for that affair.

The Holiday Letter Photos are shot, printed, and tucked inside Holiday Letters that are composed, printed, prettied-up and stuffed into envelopes that are addressed. We just have to add Claire’s Three Year Photo, and the appointment for that photo shoot is already made! Stamping and sealing should be a quick and fun activity, and we’re right on schedule for my December 1st Deadline!

The Holiday Gift Lists are made and checked twice. As soon as the last package arrives, joining the things we purchased locally, we’ll get them wrapped, boxed up and ready for distribution.

Thanksgiving passes the baton to Birthday who passes the torch to Christmas, and then the Guest Room (aka The Gift Storage Room) will be livable again, just in time for our guests to arrive. After the Birthday Party, we’ll put up the tree, set out the presents, and enjoy the ride.

And then, as soon as January gets here, I can start working on our Valentines.

Just kidding!

Kinda…

;)

Today is Day 24 of 30 in the NaBloPoMo Challenge! Check it out! A post for day 24 AND a recurring To Do List Item checked off The List for today and added to tomorrow’s…yes!

Thank You Photo Card

I think most everyone should have received their Thank You Cards in the mail by now, so I’m going to post the picture online! (I didn’t want to ruin the surprise.)

Claire colored special pictures on the Thank You Cards for her birthday presents, but for the Thank You Cards for her Christmas presents, I went with my old stand-by…photo cards!

I love photo cards. They are so versatile, simple and fun to make. I’ve had fun putting together photo cards for all kinds of occasions in the past: Claire’s birth announcement, Holiday Cards, Valentine’s Day Cards, or Just Thinking of You cards. I even used a picture of Claire taken on her first birthday for her Thank You cards for her gifts from that event.

I usually use whichever major retailer is offering the better deal at the time, and I create them online and have them delivered to the house (or have them printed for pick-up, depending on my schedule). When used as Thank You Cards, they are a neat way to thank the gracious givers of gifts and also give those people a cute picture of Claire at the same time.

It’s pretty easy to have “Thank you! Love, Claire” printed on the card with enough room left over to write a personalized thank you note on each one. (I love things that save me time, yet leave my options open for including a personal touch.)

Here is the picture we chose this year for the Holiday Thank You Photo Cards:

If every picture is worth 1,000 words, this one is worth 1,002…the last two being Thank You, of course. ;)

Loot

Toy Store Explosion

Toy Store Explosion

Momma is trying to get the Kitchen assembled as the Ballerina wastes no time starting to cook (both gifts listed below).

Hand-knitted rabbit hat

Here is a close-up of the Rabbit Hat (as listed below). What you can’t really see is that the ties have carrots (like the ones on the top of the hat) knitted onto the ends of them.

Click on each photo to enlarge it. Clicking again on each photo will show you even more details.

Everyone was so generous to us this year, and from the sounds of it, everyone enjoyed the gifts that we gave to them as well. It was another successful gift-giving exchange!

In no particular order, here is a list of Claire’s loot:

Claire’s Gift Card, Target Gift Card, money, Wild Animal Baby Magazine Subscription, a Grinch Christmas Tree Ornament, four books, a coloring book with crayons, box of fruit bars, bag of dried fruit, numbers/letters/shapes that stick to the bathtub walls when wet, a mesh bag (in the shape of a turtle) for all her bathtub toys, play-doh set (complete with tools), a kitchen ensemble (complete with sink, fridge, microwave, stove top, blender, and a double oven) and many play food sets (some that you can pretend to cut with faux knives and then put back together with Velcro), dollhouse and two room set-ups, a princess tea set, a dress/turtleneck outfit w/matching purse, hand-knitted hat (complete with rabbits and carrots – see above), and a ballerina outfit.

Whew. I think that’s it…but with a toy store explosion like that, it’s quite possible I missed an item here or there. If I did, I’m sure we will find it over the next few days as she re-discovers all these cool toys. (Some of the food sets haven’t even been opened yet! We’re trying to make this experience last as long as it can!)

I’m hoping to get official Thank Yous out in the mail soon. They’ve been ordered and should be here shortly. (I’m doing something similar to what I’ve done in years past, and it’s a surprise.) ;)

In the meantime…Thanks to all!! Now, I’d better get back to work. Because of an impending storm (which actually seems to have arrived today!), our guests have left us.  Luckily, Daddy will be here to keep the Ballerina Chef entertained while I at least pretend to work today. ;)

Back to work

Well, technically, I’m working today. Realistically, I’m rather unmotivated. I worked really hard last week before the holiday to set things up so that today could be a lazy day. So, I think I’ll be taking advantage of that. Tomorrow, I’ll pay for it, but I’m having too much fun today to really care. :)

Claire, on the other hand, is working hard. She’s currently serving my brother-in-law meals that she’s made by hand in her new kitchen. It’s really comical watching a big, burly welder-dude drinking pretend tea out of a faux-delicate princess cup. ;)

Next, he’ll be helping her move furniture around in her brand-new dollhouse. Moving furniture is definitely more his style. :)

A New Camera!

Well, I got to open my super-secret surprise present today, and it is a new camera!! This makes me extremely happy. The old digital camera we have (that has taken most of the pics on my websites) was a really good camera years ago. And, it still works for its intended purposes, but it’s slow. Life with a toddler is fast. Things would be easier if the two were more the same speed. ;)

This camera rocks! My hubby has done a great job finding a fabulous gift. A while ago, we actually looked at one like this at the store, and I was impressed. I’m not a professional photographer, so I like cameras that do pretty much everything for me. Oh, look at that! Click. Ooooh, pretty. ;)

I didn’t think anything of it, because we have a digital camera that works, and the budget didn’t allow much room for an extravagant purchase at the time. It was on my wish list, but I didn’t really think it would become a reality anytime soon.

Well, he really surprised me!

Needless to say, I’m thrilled. I haven’t had much time to play around with it, but I’m amazed that when you push the button, it takes a picture. I know, I know…that’s what cameras are supposed to do, but our old camera would take its sweet old time really understanding that what you wanted to do was take a picture after you’d pressed the button, and then usually what you were taking a picture of was just a fleeting memory.

My in-laws have a nice digital camera, but there is literally a five-second delay between when you press the button and when the picture is actually taken. Like I said, a lot happens in a span of five-seconds when there’s a toddler involved.

This new camera is practically instantaneous. I nearly dropped it; it was so fast. Luckily, my hubby got a cool strap that comes with it. I’ve always had a wrist strap, and this is a neck-strap. We’ll see which one I prefer.

And, the screen on the back is HUGE. It takes up practically the whole back of the camera! I feel like I’m taking pictures with a big-screen TV.

It’s awesome.

So, that’s what was in my super-secret surprise package…and I couldn’t be happier!

Here’s a picture of my new little Canon PowerShot SD870 IS Digital Elph:

My new camera

Even taken without the flash, this picture turned out pretty good. You can see the back of the camera in the mirror. (Click on the photo to enlarge it. Clicking on it a second time will make it even bigger.)

Note: I’ll post an update on Claire’s gifts tomorrow, or whenever I have a chance to sort through the toy-store that exploded in our living room. ;) Needless to say, she is thrilled (and rather overwhelmed) with all the wonderful gifts she received…and I think we all share that sentiment.
