Happy 4th of July! (and an update…)

Well, we have good news about my dad! He’s doing so well on the medications that he may be able to come home early next week! This is quite a relief. He’s relatively young (he’s only 59) and stubborn…two criteria that seem to be helping in the recovery process. (Well, the “stubborn” portion of that mix can go both ways, as I’m sure most of the nurses on duty the day he went to the hospital can attest.) ;)

But, just as we were all sighing a big sigh of relief in this situation, things took a bad turn for my maternal grandmother. Sadly, she suffered a massive stroke yesterday morning and is not expected to recover. She has been unresponsive since the incident, so the end is near. :(

I know it’s cliché to say that she’s 90 and lived a full life…but it’s true. It doesn’t make the sadness any less powerful, but it does make me thankful that she’s been able to experience life to its fullest. My hope for her is that she’s at peace soon and not in any pain.

Of course, in the midst of all this, time marches on. Because my dad was in the clear, we continued full-steam ahead with our vacation plans. Even with these new developments, we’re still moving ahead with our trip to the mountains for a weekend get-away with my brother-in-law. (He arrived from out-of-state just in time for dinner on Thursday night.) We’ve been looking forward to this trip for a while, so hopefully this long holiday weekend will serve as a nice way to recharge after this incredibly stressful week and store up energy for what we could be facing next week. Time will tell if we need to cut our trip short, but my relatives have assured me that there isn’t anything that can be done at this point. Go! Try to enjoy the holiday! Easier said than done? Perhaps…but we’ll try.

Depending on what happens, we may be making a pit-stop at home on our way eastward. Or maybe we’ll have time to regroup before heading out again. It all depends on what transpires over the next few days. Nothing like living life on the edge!

In other news, I won’t have access to the blog while in the mountains, but Merlin has begged and begged to do some guest posts for me, so be sure to check those out. Something tells me that they won’t be nearly as insightful as Jasper’s, but like bloggers everywhere, every kitty has his own style. ;)

In showing Merlin how to look through the photos, I found some Festive Photos Fit for the Fourth, so here they are.

Claire is 7-months old in these photos, and it’s hard to believe that two years has passed! In these photos, I was posing her in her 4th of July dress. And, the last photo captures the personality that still shows through today.

So, we’re off! Have a happy holiday, and don’t eat too much birthday cake. ;)

Day Eight

The last day. They should be home today! Well, they’ll be home later tonight, barring any unforeseen weather issues or whatnot. And, from what I hear, it’s the whatnot you have to worry about. ;)

I’ve had fun typing this blog, but I’m not sure I could do it for much longer. You’d be amazed at how much concentration this takes. I mean, I’m a cat. This is a lot of work. I’m practically royalty.

Another picture of me, Jasper.

Plus, I’m too cute to spend my life typing.

This reminds me of a good joke. Ready?

Q: What’s the difference between dogs and cats?

A: A dog says, “They feed me. They house me. They love me. They must be gods!” A cat says, “They feed me. They house me. They love me. I must be a god!”

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. :)

But, I’m happy that Momma trusted me to update her blog. I’ve had fun. It was hard reliving my feelings from when Claire came to join us, but I’m glad I did. This blog thing is totally like therapy, and I think I’ve finally let the last of my issues go. And, yes, if you look at the Kitties Category on the side, you’ll see that we have a really low number of entries compared to the Claire Category, but if I’ve learned one thing, I’ve learned that it really isn’t a competition. There’s room in their lives for all three of us: Me, Merlin and Claire. And, that’s pretty cool.

Plus, when Momma told me if I’d update her blog I’d get to use a mouse, I was pretty excited.

Needless to say, it’s not at all what I expected.

So, until she needs another guest blogger, I’m outta here.

Sunday’s Post by Jasper

Day Seven

It’s Sunday! They’ll be home tomorrow! Today’s itinerary says, “Family Reunion.” I’m not quite sure what that means, but I’m sure they’ll tell us all about it when they return. Merlin says it sounds like fun. Then again, Merlin says everything sounds like fun.

And, we’ve actually been pretty good while they’ve been away this time. Well, relatively speaking. There’s no need to mention anything that would be incriminating.

Did you know that in my research for this blog I stumbled upon a whole folder called Naughty Kitty!? In it are many compromising photos of Merlin and myself that would hardly stand up in court, Your Honor. Seriously. I’d like to see the wording on that warrant. Can’t these people let us be naughty in peace? Put the camera down. There’s nothing to see here.

Against my better judgment, here are some of my favorites. They remind me of such fun times:

Click photos to enlarge.

Naughty Kitty 1

This was one of my favorite places to sit, before they ruined the main bathroom. I still don’t know why this was upsetting to Momma.

Naughty Kitty 2

Back before Claire’s arrival and we ate in the kitchen like normal creatures, I loved sitting up here. I think Momma was angry because Merlin would try this maneuver and tip over the water. Just because he’s not skilled doesn’t make me the naughty one.

Naughty Kitty 3

Yeah, so there’s a little spot in the ceiling of the basement workroom/floor of the kitchen. It’s comfy. What’s it to ya? And, they have yet to figure out a way to block it off successfully. I’m nothing if not persistent.

Naughty Kitty 4

When Momma was pregnant with Claire, she got a lot of nice maternity clothes from her friends. She kept them folded so neatly on the shelf in her closet. They made a wonderful kitty bed. Needless to say, I was very sad when she gave them back to her friends.

Naughty Kitty 5

Back before Momma had her flat screen monitor, Merlin and I loved this heat-rock on her desk. It was so nice and warm. I’m still not sure why she didn’t like for us to do this. It was the best seat in the house, and I miss it dearly. In fact, one day Merlin tried to jump up on her flat screen monitor, and he was quite startled by the result. The look on his face was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen…not so much the look on Momma’s face. She was less than pleased.

See?
That’s not what I would call naughty. I’d call that talented.

I’ve got one more day left of my blogging contract, so I’d better go rest up.
See ya tomorrow!

Day Six

So, I asked Momma if I could take a break from posting since it was the weekend, and she told me no.  She said something about wanting to post every day for at least a whole year, and how I’d really help her out if I continued posting every day.  When we were talking about what I was going to blog about, she said something about how June 3rd was going to be her 300th day of posting.

Oops.
I think I was supposed to have mentioned that…
On June 3rd.
Wasn’t that a few days ago?

So, uh…
Quick!  What do I do!?

Uh…I know!

Happy 304th day of posting, Momma!  Whew…that was lucky.
I can’t be expected to remember everything.  Geez.

So, let’s see what the itinerary says today:  Today they are planning on going on a little outing to the third state on their Midwestern Trifecta Tour.  And, they might go to the Zoo!  All of this depends on how well everyone is doing with all the traveling.  Busy, busy, busy!

Speaking of the Zoo, I’ve always wondered what kinds of animals are at the Zoo?

Click photos to enlarge.

Not sure what it is, but I don’t like it.

Merlin’s behavior is alarming.

He tells me there’s nothing to worry about, but I don’t believe him.

And, do they have any that look like this?  Because if so, that would be scary, and I don’t think I’d like the Zoo one bit.

Note:  When Momma sees the pictures I posted, she’s going to wonder which is scarier: our perception of her friends’ dog, the old rug in the kitchen, or the color the house used to be…  ;)

Well, it’s Saturday, so I’m keepin’ this post short.  I told her I’d post every day, but I didn’t promise to write a whole novel each time.

Stay tuned for what I have to add tomorrow!

Day Five

Yea! It’s Friday! Humans get so excited about this day, but it’s just another day to me. Let’s see where Momma, Daddy and Claire are today. According to the itinerary, they are heading back to where they were the first night, so that they can spend some quality time with Daddy’s family. So, another three or four hours of driving. Lucky them!

So, let’s get on with my story. Where was I? Oh, yes. The Baby Claire.

I still remember when they brought that little creature home. She smelled just like that hat Daddy left in the hallway. She was really quiet but kept making tiny squeaky noises.

I took one look and turned my back on her. I walked away so fast, that they didn’t even get a good picture of me sniffing her.

Claire’s introduction to Jasper

I remember Merlin looking down on Claire from a safe vantage point on the back of the couch. Good call! Be up where you can size-up the situation!

Claire’s introduction to Merlin

But, he let his curiosity get the best of him, and down he came to check things out.

Claire’s introduction to Merlin

Merlin was completely overwhelmed by her charm. He’s weak. I wasn’t so careless. I was strong. I kept my distance. Her crying hurt my ears, but I tried not to let anyone notice. Everyone seemed to cater to her. This little tiny thing is here one week and already she has more visitors than what we’d seen in months.

I could see that I had major competition for my momma, so I gave up. I let Claire have her. I tried to pretend like I didn’t need Momma anymore. It seemed to work. Momma would get teary when I’d refuse to snuggle with her on the couch. She didn’t need me anyway; she had her new little baby to keep her warm. Even when Claire was in her crib, locked away behind the screen door, I didn’t go to Momma. I wanted to punish her and make her feel the way she’d made me feel.

I know this hurt Momma, and I’m sorry for my behavior. I finally realized that love isn’t like that. I finally realized that it’s impossible to run out of love, and just because Claire was more important than me on one level, it didn’t mean I wasn’t important at all. I’ve tried to make it up to Momma since, and she seems to have forgiven me and forgotten my insolent behavior.

People think the lives of cats are so easy. Well, for kitties like Merlin, life is blissful. For thinking kitties like me, things get a bit tough now and then.

But, I’ve worked through all my issues, so life is good again. Life will be even better once I successfully sneak up on my brother and pounce on him. I always take him by surprise…so I’m gonna go do that right now.

I have a lot more to share. This whole blog thing is totally like therapy.

Until tomorrow…

Day Four

Well, Thursday is normally garbage day around here. This is the day that they either remember to take the trash out or Momma runs around like a crazy person trying to beat the garbage truck. The trash didn’t make it out today, but I think that’s okay. I mean, they’re not here!

Today’s itinerary note says that they are helping to celebrate Momma’s youngest nephew’s First Birthday! Very cool.

This is a good segue for talking about someone else’s arrival: The Baby Claire.

Momma and Daddy had been talking for months now about “Baby Girl” this and “Baby Girl” that. I thought it had something to do with the fact that we’d been tossed out of our room and Momma’s tummy turning into a big ol’ belly, but Merlin wasn’t convinced. He thought it was about something else entirely. I don’t remember now what it was, but he’s usually wrong. And, he was.

I will never forget the day that Daddy came home from somewhere with a tiny knit hat. Momma had been gone for an eternity, and I was hoping she’d come home too, but she didn’t. The hat smelled weird. It smelled like Momma, but something else, too. It smelled odd. He put it outside the room that used to be ours and left it there. Merlin and I would sniff it every now and then. Merlin was excited that this meant something awesome was going to happen. I was not convinced. This was ominous foreshadowing if I’d ever seen it.

I was gonna have to share my momma. She was my Momma first! And, no one seemed to care.

Life as we knew it was going to be ruined.

Me? Dramatic? Why would you think such a thing? Yes, I tend to be dramatic. And, I’ll admit that I wasn’t completely right in my assumptions. Yes, life as we new it took a drastic turn, but it wasn’t ruined. It was just different. And, to be honest, I don’t even really remember what life was like before Claire came into the picture.

I have so much more to type about all this, but I’m having trouble concentrating. My brother is trying to distract me, so I need to go play a good game of chase.

Stay tuned for the rest of the story!

Day Three

So…the third day without them.  Are they ever coming back?  I hope so.  Momma left an itinerary on her desk, and today’s festivities include spending the day with her four nephews and other members of her family.  Whew.  Four boys?  I’m glad we only have one little girl to contend with here…

Which brings me back to where I was yesterday…

Something was up and we weren’t sure what.

Merlin has always been Daddy’s kitty and I was Momma’s.  Yes, we came home from our foster family together, and yes, I’m sure they love both of us equally, but from the very beginning, it was clear who was whose.

Well, Daddy stayed the same, but Momma started to change.

Her tummy started to get really big.  And round.  And hard.

35 weeks

My favorite lap in the whole world was getting smaller and smaller.  I can’t even explain the sadness I felt.  I couldn’t cuddle with her like I used to.  Sometimes, something in that belly would move and poke at me.  It really freaked me out.

Our routine had always been the same!  We’d snuggle on the couch at night and watch a TV show or two.  I’d curl up on her lap and purr.  Life was good.  Life was awesome.

But, life was changing.

She’d done this on purpose, and I was not happy.  It’s taken me a long time to actually admit out loud how upset I was at her.  But, I couldn’t handle my feelings.  All I could do was look at her with a sad face.  When her belly got really big, I didn’t want anything to do with her…because I was so sad.  I wanted my Momma back.  I wanted my lap back.

This made me very sad.

I hate to end posts on such a sad note, so I’ll jump in here and say that things are much better now.  Yes, they are totally different, but I’m finally getting back to normal.

That being said, there’s a whole bunch more I’d like to blog about…

Stay tuned for the rest of the story!  It’s time for me to see if Momma’s friend put more food in the bowls downstairs.

Day Two

Well, we survived the first day without them.

The itinerary she left on the desk says something about “driving again, but this time for only three or four hours.” Ugh. All that driving! I’m not sure why they were excited to leave.

Anyway, it sure is quiet without Claire here. You wouldn’t think something so small and dainty would make such a racket. Don’t get me wrong. I love Claire. I especially love Claire when she’s not trying to strangle me. I’m quick, so this all works out for everyone. I would never hurt her, and Momma knows this, but Momma is good about reminding Claire to be gentle.

Like I said, I’m quick.

I can’t believe how different life is with Claire here. Is she really going to be three at the end of November? Holy mice, time flies.

We are fortunate to live in a huge house that we had all to ourselves. We could roam at will and every room was ours. We had one room that really was ours. The guest room on the main level (the guest room downstairs was always off limits to us…) had a nice comfy bed with an awesome fleece blanket at the foot of it. Merlin and I would sleep curled up there together during the day. We’d sleep with Momma and Daddy when they were home at night, but that was an awesome place to nap.

Speaking of Momma and Daddy, we called them that from the very beginning. They keep saying that it’s a new thing that Claire has done, but we did it first.

Anyway, one day, all that changed. They started moving things out of that room. They gave the mattress to a friend. They moved the file cabinet downstairs. The drafting table, chair and the table with the cool lamp went downstairs too.

This was not cool.

Then, they painted the room and added this to the doorway.

Click photos to enlarge.

Nursery Screen Door

Yes, that is a screen door. INSIDE the house. Even I know that’s not quite right. All of a sudden, we weren’t allowed in that room. OUR room. And, then…it got worse. THEY MOVED OUR FOOD AND WATER. Now, we had to walk ALL THE WAY DOWNSTAIRS to eat and drink. We couldn’t eat in the kitchen like we used to. They were treating us like animals!

Not only did they put a screen door on that room, keeping us locked out, they added a really cool piece of furniture.

Changing Table / Dresser

Daddy’s father made this all by himself. He’s quite the craftsman. Doesn’t it look like the perfect kitty bed to you!? Exactly. And, yet, we were shut out of what used to be our room. Barbarians.

Something was up, but we weren’t quite sure what…

Stay tuned for the rest of the story! It’s time for me to go wrestle with my brother.

Day One

Well, it’s just after midnight, and they are still here. They are planning on leaving to go on a Tour of the Midwestern Trifecta later today, and Momma has left me in charge of the blog in her absence.

She says she had to decide between me and Merlin, and she opted for me.

Click photos to enlarge.

This is me, Jasper.

I’m the better speller.
Merlin gets distracted easily.

Merlin Swatting

In fact, this picture pretty much sums up his personality.

I could tell that she was just pretending to mull it over for Merlin’s benefit. She didn’t want to hurt his feelings. It’s no shock to me that she never intended to let Merlin anywhere near her blog.

Don’t get me wrong. He’s a great kitty brother to have, and I’ve known him my whole life. We were born into the same litter, even though we look nothing alike. That happens sometimes. You can read all about us, here.

Anyway, I’ve decided to write about a whole bunch of things while they are gone. On today’s itinerary is “a bunch of driving.” She said something about how they have to drive for seven or eight hours today to reach the first destination. I hate riding in the car to the vet, and it takes maybe three minutes…literally…so I wish them the best of luck.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post.
It’s time for me to go bat my brother upside the head.

Guest Posts by Jasper

As you may have gathered from some of the previous posts, we’re going on a little trip! Never fear…I’ve convinced Jasper to take care of things here at the blog for the week. He’s a pretty reliable kitty, so I’m confident that he’ll keep things running smoothly.

I’m sure he’d love comments, so don’t be shy. Just writing a daily blog is a lot for a kitty, so don’t be offended if he doesn’t respond to them.  I’ll be sure to get back to everyone when we return!

Have a great week and enjoy my Guest Blogger here at The Casual Perfectionist!
