Squiddy Gwiddy Itty Bitty Bitty Bitty Ball

This fluffy little blue ball is Squiddy Gwiddy Itty Bitty Bitty Bitty Ball.  She came home on an art project on Monday from Claire’s Young Preschoolers Class.

That night, Merlin took a liking to Squiddy Gwiddy Itty Bitty Bitty Bitty Ball and rescued her from the paper pumpkin where she was adorned and batted her into Claire’s room.

That’s where Claire found her.
And named her.
And, she didn’t get a short, easy-to-type name.  Noooooo…that would be too easy.  😉

And, if you don’t get her full name said correctly the first time, you will be corrected by Claire.  Needless to say, I’ve got it memorized.

Squiddy Gwiddy Itty Bitty Bitty Bitty Ball is just lucky Merlin didn’t bat her under the fridge, which is where most everything goes…eventually.

So, even though we’ve only had Squiddy Gwiddy Itty Bitty Bitty Bitty Ball in our charge for a few days, Claire is totally smitten.  She goes everywhere with us.  She’s a little harder to contain than Baby Piggy, but I’m trying my best.

Thankfully, my jeans have a special pocket designed just for her.

A special pocket just for her

A special pocket just for her

All this time, I thought that little pocket was for coins or something.  But, come to think of it, I’ve never used that little pocket until now.

Squiddy Gwiddy Itty Bitty Bitty Bitty Ball went with us yesterday on a playdate, and she peeked out a couple times and even met some of Claire’s friends.

She also went to vote with us. She didn’t get a sticker.  It was bigger than she is!

In fact, life is pretty interesting when you have a name bigger than you are.  😉

Because it was their idea

Claire still takes a nap in the afternoon, some days more willingly than others.  On the days that we’re really active, her nap is not only necessary, but usually comes easily.  Yesterday was no exception.  We’d had a really busy morning, which involved an hour-long-session at the local gymnastics place.  For an hour, the kids can run around with parental supervision, playing on the bouncy floor, climbing all over these really cool foam-like shapes, walking on the balance beams, swinging from a rope, and hanging like monkeys on the uneven bars.  It’s awesome.  It’s $2 for the hour.  (Every time I see the price, that quote from one of my favorite movies pops into my head.  “I want  my two dollars!”  Bonus points to the people who actually get that reference.)  🙂

Then, we got to go to the Emissions Testing place to get Momma’s car tested!  It’s hard to believe that my car has reached that milestone.   (Out here, new cars are exempt until their fifth year, and then you have to do it every two years…my car is a 2004, so it’s time!)  Thankfully, it passed with flying colors, and Claire was really good during the entire process. They have it set up so that those waiting can watch the corresponding graphs for each car being tested on the computer monitors, which, I have to say, is really cool.

After lunch,  I had to do some things in my office.  Claire and Merlin were playing in her room.  Now, keep in mind, her naptime was coming up, but I wanted to wrap up one last thing before going to battle.  Then, I realized that it was very quiet in her room.  That usually is cause for alarm.  (You would think that loud and rowdy would be cause for alarm, but quiet is often worse.  Plots thicken in the quietness.  Covert operations are conducted in the quietness.  Schemes thrive in the quietness.)  So, I peeked in her room.

Merlin and Claire Napping

Dastardly plans weren’t being enacted.  In fact, both Claire and Merlin were napping!  Had I requested she take a nap, and had I wanted Merlin to sit still with her, I’m sure I would have been met with resistance.  But, if it’s their idea?  We all win.

Merlin and Claire Napping

And for the record, as you can see, only one of them is really napping…  😉

Happy 7th Birthday, Guys!!

My babies are SEVEN years old today!  According to Dr. Google, that is 44 years old in human years.  (They are now ten years older than me…and that’s old!)  😉

Last year, in honor of their birthday, I wrote all about their story and how they came to live with us.

You can read about that here.

Happy Birthday, Guys!!

Monday’s Post by Merlin

So, they’re supposed to be back today. I think. Jasper keeps track of all the details around here. I’m not sure if Momma will have a chance to post today or not…so I’ll post for her. See? I can be an overachiever. Jasper’s not the only one.

Or maybe she told me to post on Monday, and I just don’t remember? We won’t tell her that part. Let’s just stay with the “Merlin can be an overachiever, too” part. 😉

That being said, I’m not sure what else there is to say. A picture would make this post an official post, so I’ll be sure to add one…and then my guest blogger duties are fulfilled.

Now I think I’ll go back to looking out the window with Jasper.  (I’m the cute black one on the left with the long monkey tail.)

Keeping a watchful eye

Anyway, I gotta run. It’s been fun!

Sunday’s Post by Merlin

Okay, so, this posting thing doesn’t seem to be too difficult. It does take a lot of concentra…

Oops. I did it again. You don’t understand. That neighbor-cat comes on the deck and tries to taunt us. We must maintain our dignity and Jasper needed my assistance at the glass door in the kitchen.

Anyway, I’m back. Where was I?

Oh, yes. This posting thing doesn’t seem to be too difficult.  Still, typing takes so much energy, so I’ll stick to photos.

Well, here are some photos that Momma hasn’t shown you. (Be sure to click on each one to enlarge. Clicking again will show more detail.) I figure now is as good a time as any to prove to you that Claire is a real child. Some of you may be thinking that she’s just this cute little figment of someone’s imagination. She’s so photogenic and always perfectly posed.

That is not the Claire we know and love. I mean, it is, but there’s another side to her.

The one we know used to cry.

Another side to Claire

Granted, she doesn’t cry as much as she used to, and we were told she didn’t cry as much as some babies do…but still. Cry she did.

And, then there’s the cute photos Momma posts, but she doesn’t show the whole story.

Some of you may remember this photo:

Claire in a diaper box - June 2007

But, I bet you didn’t get to see this one:

Behind the scenes

Momma claims that she was taking the picture as Claire fell…but you be the judge. By the way, Claire wasn’t hurt in the filming of that documentary.

And, then? Last year, there was this huge commotion, all kinds of ruckus, and then our house was full of firefighters. Something about Claire’s head bleeding all over the place. Afterwards, Momma insisted on taking photos of Claire’s wound, but after a while, Claire had had enough.

No more pictures!

Even I can tell that Claire is done with the photos, yes? Silly Momma. Hasn’t poor Claire been through enough?

But, I realize it can be hard to tell when someone doesn’t want her picture taken versus when that someone is just being coy:

Stop it!

So much has happened since Momma took that picture of Claire in February 2006! Isn’t she a cutie? I’m glad she lives here.

Anyway, I gotta run. Until tomorrow…

Saturday’s Post by Merlin

Momma, Daddy and Claire have gone to the mountains. Claire’s uncle went with them, and I hope they have a great time. I’m sure they will…they always seem to.

I begged and begged Momma to let me do a guest post for her while she was gone. Jasper got to do it last time, so I thought it was my turn.

She thinks I’m unfocused and not capable of…

OH! I’ll be right back! Something really cool is happening in the other room!!

Hmmm…where was I? Oh, right. Maybe this is why she told me just to find some pictures to post and not worry about typing a whole lot.

So, I’ll keep this short.

Momma told me to remind you to click on the photos to enlarge and clicking a second time will show more detail. I’m not sure what that means or why it’s important, but I’m glad I remembered to tell you.

Merlin and Claire

Here is a picture of Claire when she was just six months old. (She is two-and-a-half, but it just seems like we took this picture yesterday!)  She and I used to hang out all the time, and we still do, actually. It was easier to hang out with her when she wasn’t very mobile…but I’ve adjusted.

I swear, I had nothing to do with this! Momma and I turned our backs for just a moment, and look what we found! Jasper says he knew this would happen, but he’s just a little Know-It-All-Kitty, if you ask me.

Anyway, I gotta run. Until tomorrow…

Happy 4th of July! (and an update…)

Well, we have good news about my dad! He’s doing so well on the medications that he may be able to come home early next week! This is quite a relief. He’s relatively young (he’s only 59) and stubborn…two criteria that seem to be helping in the recovery process. (Well, the “stubborn” portion of that mix can go both ways, as I’m sure most of the nurses on duty the day he went to the hospital can attest.) 😉

But, just as we were all sighing a big sigh of relief in this situation, things took a bad turn for my maternal grandmother. Sadly, she suffered a massive stroke yesterday morning and is not expected to recover. She has been unresponsive since the incident, so the end is near. 🙁

I know it’s cliché to say that she’s 90 and lived a full life…but it’s true. It doesn’t make the sadness any less powerful, but it does make me thankful that she’s been able to experience life to its fullest. My hope for her is that she’s at peace soon and not in any pain.

Of course, in the midst of all this, time marches on. Because my dad was in the clear, we continued full-steam ahead with our vacation plans. Even with these new developments, we’re still moving ahead with our trip to the mountains for a weekend get-away with my brother-in-law. (He arrived from out-of-state just in time for dinner on Thursday night.) We’ve been looking forward to this trip for a while, so hopefully this long holiday weekend will serve as a nice way to recharge after this incredibly stressful week and store up energy for what we could be facing next week. Time will tell if we need to cut our trip short, but my relatives have assured me that there isn’t anything that can be done at this point. Go! Try to enjoy the holiday! Easier said than done? Perhaps…but we’ll try.

Depending on what happens, we may be making a pit-stop at home on our way eastward. Or maybe we’ll have time to regroup before heading out again. It all depends on what transpires over the next few days. Nothing like living life on the edge!

In other news, I won’t have access to the blog while in the mountains, but Merlin has begged and begged to do some guest posts for me, so be sure to check those out. Something tells me that they won’t be nearly as insightful as Jasper’s, but like bloggers everywhere, every kitty has his own style. 😉

In showing Merlin how to look through the photos, I found some Festive Photos Fit for the Fourth, so here they are.

Claire is 7-months old in these photos, and it’s hard to believe that two years has passed! In these photos, I was posing her in her 4th of July dress. And, the last photo captures the personality that still shows through today.

There’s the rascally Claire we know and love!

So, we’re off! Have a happy holiday, and don’t eat too much birthday cake. 😉

Another Monday’s Post by Jasper

Monday, June 9th
Day Eight

The last day. They should be home today! Well, they’ll be home later tonight, barring any unforeseen weather issues or whatnot. And, from what I hear, it’s the whatnot you have to worry about. 😉

I’ve had fun typing this blog, but I’m not sure I could do it for much longer. You’d be amazed at how much concentration this takes. I mean, I’m a cat. This is a lot of work. I’m practically royalty.

Another picture of me, Jasper.

Plus, I’m too cute to spend my life typing.

This reminds me of a good joke. Ready?

Q: What’s the difference between dogs and cats?

A: A dog says, “They feed me. They house me. They love me. They must be gods!” A cat says, “They feed me. They house me. They love me. I must be a god!”

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. 🙂

But, I’m happy that Momma trusted me to update her blog. I’ve had fun. It was hard reliving my feelings from when Claire came to join us, but I’m glad I did. This blog thing is totally like therapy, and I think I’ve finally let the last of my issues go. And, yes, if you look at the Kitties Category on the side, you’ll see that we have a really low number of entries compared to the Claire Category, but if I’ve learned one thing, I’ve learned that it really isn’t a competition. There’s room in their lives for all three of us: Me, Merlin and Claire. And, that’s pretty cool.

Plus, when Momma told me if I’d update her blog I’d get to use a mouse, I was pretty excited.

Needless to say, it’s not at all what I expected.

So, until she needs another guest blogger, I’m outta here.

Sunday’s Post by Jasper

Sunday, June 8th
Day Seven

It’s Sunday! They’ll be home tomorrow! Today’s itinerary says, “Family Reunion.” I’m not quite sure what that means, but I’m sure they’ll tell us all about it when they return. Merlin says it sounds like fun. Then again, Merlin says everything sounds like fun.

And, we’ve actually been pretty good while they’ve been away this time. Well, relatively speaking. There’s no need to mention anything that would be incriminating.

Did you know that in my research for this blog I stumbled upon a whole folder called Naughty Kitty!? In it are many compromising photos of Merlin and myself that would hardly stand up in court, Your Honor. Seriously. I’d like to see the wording on that warrant. Can’t these people let us be naughty in peace? Put the camera down. There’s nothing to see here.

Against my better judgment, here are some of my favorites. They remind me of such fun times:

Click photos to enlarge.

Naughty Kitty 1

This was one of my favorite places to sit, before they ruined the main bathroom. I still don’t know why this was upsetting to Momma.

Naughty Kitty 2

Back before Claire’s arrival and we ate in the kitchen like normal creatures, I loved sitting up here. I think Momma was angry because Merlin would try this maneuver and tip over the water. Just because he’s not skilled doesn’t make me the naughty one.

Naughty Kitty 3

Yeah, so there’s a little spot in the ceiling of the basement workroom/floor of the kitchen. It’s comfy. What’s it to ya? And, they have yet to figure out a way to block it off successfully. I’m nothing if not persistent.

Naughty Kitty 4

When Momma was pregnant with Claire, she got a lot of nice maternity clothes from her friends. She kept them folded so neatly on the shelf in her closet. They made a wonderful kitty bed. Needless to say, I was very sad when she gave them back to her friends.

Naughty Kitty 5

Back before Momma had her flat screen monitor, Merlin and I loved this heat-rock on her desk. It was so nice and warm. I’m still not sure why she didn’t like for us to do this. It was the best seat in the house, and I miss it dearly. In fact, one day Merlin tried to jump up on her flat screen monitor, and he was quite startled by the result. The look on his face was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen…not so much the look on Momma’s face. She was less than pleased.

That’s not what I would call naughty. I’d call that talented.

I’ve got one more day left of my blogging contract, so I’d better go rest up.
See ya tomorrow!

Saturday’s Post by Jasper

Saturday, June 7th
Day Six

So, I asked Momma if I could take a break from posting since it was the weekend, and she told me no.  She said something about wanting to post every day for at least a whole year, and how I’d really help her out if I continued posting every day.  When we were talking about what I was going to blog about, she said something about how June 3rd was going to be her 300th day of posting.

I think I was supposed to have mentioned that…
On June 3rd.
Wasn’t that a few days ago?

So, uh…
Quick!  What do I do!?

Uh…I know!

Happy 304th day of posting, Momma!  Whew…that was lucky.
I can’t be expected to remember everything.  Geez.

So, let’s see what the itinerary says today:  Today they are planning on going on a little outing to the third state on their Midwestern Trifecta Tour.  And, they might go to the Zoo!  All of this depends on how well everyone is doing with all the traveling.  Busy, busy, busy!

Speaking of the Zoo, I’ve always wondered what kinds of animals are at the Zoo?

Click photos to enlarge.

Not sure what it is, but I don’t like it.

Merlin’s behavior is alarming.

He tells me there’s nothing to worry about, but I don’t believe him.

And, do they have any that look like this?  Because if so, that would be scary, and I don’t think I’d like the Zoo one bit.

Note:  When Momma sees the pictures I posted, she’s going to wonder which is scarier: our perception of her friends’ dog, the old rug in the kitchen, or the color the house used to be…  😉

Well, it’s Saturday, so I’m keepin’ this post short.  I told her I’d post every day, but I didn’t promise to write a whole novel each time.

Stay tuned for what I have to add tomorrow!
