33-months!

On Saturday, Claire turned 33-months old!

When she came out to the kitchen for breakfast, I told her I wanted to take her picture. She was feeling rather accommodating and shouted, “Cheese!” Of course, even with the faster camera, I wasn’t quite quick enough, and I caught her not only mid-expression, but mid-blink.

Do you see the set of princess shoes? Well, this year, Claire’s costume is going to be an entire Cinderella outfit. One of my friends gave her a gorgeous Cinderella dress, and with a few minor alterations, it will be perfect to wear in October. (It’s still a little too big, but should fit just fine when I make some tweaks here and there.)

Claire and I were in SuperTarget the other day, and I decided to go down the “Princess Aisle” to see if I could find some glass slippers (or the plastic equivalent) for her costume. Imagine my surprise when I found a set of FOUR princess shoes, and one of them was a Cinderella version! It was on sale, and I could either buy FOUR princess shoes: the one I really wanted plus three extra, OR, for the same price, I could buy one pair of similar princess shoes that weren’t really Cinderella shoes anyway. Hmmm. The decision wasn’t that hard, and I got some really good behavior from the little girl sitting in the cart out of the whole deal, too.  ;)

Needless to say, Claire was in top-form from there on out.  She was beside herself with joy the entire way up to the check-out and all the way home.

We tried them all on when we got home, but the Cinderella ones are locked in her closet. I don’t want to risk anything happening to them before the end of October, so that’s where they’ll stay. She has three other pairs to play with in the meantime.

(And, yes, technically they are too big, but that’s not really an issue…)

Anyway, in the above picture, she is modeling the pink Sleeping Beauty shoes. You can see the yellow Belle shoes and the red and blue Snow White shoes in the nifty carrying case. (The light blue Cinderella shoes are already hidden away, so they are not pictured…)

She then decided to get all decked out in her Snow White shoes and her crown and a bracelet (that she loves to wear as an arm band.)

“See my bracelet Momma? Take a picture of it!”

33-months

“Momma, take a picture of my other arm!” (Maybe you had to be there, but this was a funny request and made me laugh…but I obliged.) :)

Here she is posing for the camera again!

And so the countdown to three begins…three months ‘til the big three. It doesn’t seem possible!

“Hey, Claire! Say cheese!”

“Noooooooooooooooooooooo. I don’t wannnnnnnnnnnnnnnt to.”

“Okay…you don’t have to. But, I have a question for you. How would Ariel™ say ‘cheese’? Could you show me that?”

32-months old

That’s much better. Whatever works!

Yep, Claire turned 2 yrs and 8 months old on July 30th…the most obvious part of that equation (at times) is still the TWO part. ;)

It’s been a year, and the scar has faded.

Claire turned 31-months old yesterday!

Last year, at this time, we were reeling from our very first (and only, so far, knock on wood!) trip to the Emergency Room with Claire.

In honor of her making it a whole year without another trip to the ER, here are two posts from that story again. It’s gross…so you’ve been warned. :) All’s well that ends well, and this one has a happy ending. That may make reading about all the blood easier to stomach. ;)

The original links are here and here, and there are many posts in July 2007 stemming from this event, so feel free to poke around in the archives.

In fact, I was rather prolific with the writing on July 1st, so check out that archive for some good laughs. The one about Skull-Splitter Scottish Ale still makes me laugh. ;)

The scar has faded, but I think the excitement from that day will stay vivid for some time to come. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year!!

Without further ado, here is the story again…

A Plan B Kind of Day (a.k.a. “It’s just a flesh wound!”) – Posted July, 1, 2007

Well, we had a pretty exciting day yesterday (June 30th), and it all happened on Claire’s 19-month birthday!

I’ll start by saying that Claire (and everyone) is okay now. :) This is a gross story, so you’ve been warned.

We were working on the bathroom, and then we had lunch, and then Claire and I were playing in the living room while Daddy went to Lowe’s to get some things. It was about 2:30 or so. I was going to get ready to put Claire down for her nap, but I figured we could play a little while longer.

I was sitting on the rug in front of the purple chair, and Claire ran over to me. In the process, she fell and hit her head on the corner of the chair. A large gash opened up on her forehead and there was blood spurting everywhere. I quickly applied pressure to the gash with my hand, scooped her up in my arms and ran to the kitchen to get a washcloth. The wound was so gaping and gross that I called 911. She screamed through the first part of the call, but then calmed down a bit.

So, why did I call 911 and not Daddy? Well, my husband is the only tech guy in the whole world who shuns cell phones, so I had no way to reach him. I am totally fine with him not carrying a cell phone. When he’s not here, I know I have to have a Plan B. I could have wasted valuable time trying to reach him on the cell phone, knowing that he may have not answered it or may not have had service or may have left it in the car. Plus, I doubt he could have understood me over all the screaming. Because I have accepted all of the above, I immediately jump to Plan B, and it works for everyone.

Also, because he’d gone to Lowe’s, the odds of the trip being 15 minutes or two hours were the same. Because of these things and the fact that I couldn’t take her anywhere myself, I called 911. I’m glad they came to assess the situation. They agreed that it was good I’d called them, even though I’d gotten the bleeding to stop (relatively) before they got there. Anyway, every emergency call gets a fire truck and ambulance, so that was pretty exciting for our neighbors, I’m sure. Luckily, Daddy got home before they were done with their visit, and they said that we could take her to Children’s Hospital ourselves, rather than ride in the ambulance. Had he not arrived in time, I would have had to leave a bloody note for him on the door and ridden with Claire in the ambulance.

So, the rescue personnel leave, and Daddy’s holding Claire. I start running around looking for my shoes. Daddy was like, “Uh, go look in the mirror.” I’m all like, “WHAT!? WHAT!? WHAT!? I have to find my shoes! WE HAVE TO GO!” And he calmly says, “Go look in the mirror.” So, I did, and that’s when I realized I had blood EVERYWHERE. All over my face, neck, hair, clothes. I frantically start scrubbing with a washcloth, and he quietly says, “Babe, just jump in the shower. Seriously, it will take two minutes.” He was right. That was a much better plan. Even with all the excitement, we made it to the ER about an hour or so after it happened.

As we were getting ready to leave the house, I called our babysitter (from my cell phone, from the car) to tell her that we’d have to reschedule the date-night we had been planning for the evening, and I left her a message. As we were driving down the street, her mom was on the sidewalk and we stopped to talk to her. We told her what was happening, and of course, Claire was being all cheery and saying, “HI! HI!” and waving…all with a gash in her forehead. (I was sitting in the back keeping a cloth on it.)

Claire did remarkably well at the hospital!! She was all cheery when we got there, and she kept a good attitude pretty much through the entire visit. I was amazed.

Children’s Hospital is great and obviously specializes in treating children, so the system they used was awesome. They decided that she would need one stitch inside and three on the outside. AND…they have the coolest stuff. To numb her forehead, rather than give a shot of stuff, they put this numbing gel on there. They let it set for 35 minutes, and it numbed the whole area. It was really cool.

To do the actual suturing, they swaddled her in a sheet, burrito-style, and then they had a nurse hold her head while the doctor sewed. They also have a special nurse (I forget her title) that specializes in keeping children calm, and her job was to keep Claire distracted while they stitched. They kept saying they were going to wait for this person to come to the room before starting the procedure, and I kept thinking to myself, “How hard can it be to distract Claire if she’s wrapped like a burrito? I can do that! I want to get this over with!” But, when they got the needles out and started the procedure, it was so gross, that I was having trouble focusing, and I nearly barfed. (But, I tried to keep my composure for Claire’s sake).

The lady who was devoted purely to keeping Claire distracted was more helpful than I could imagine. I was SO GLAD they had a trained professional, who didn’t even bat an eye at gaping wounds and blood, there to distract Claire. (I almost needed someone to distract me!) :) We were given the option to stay in the room while they did the procedure or wait outside. We both opted to stay with Claire, and we both did relatively well with all the blood and needles, and Daddy only had to sit down at the very end. Actually, my husband doesn’t do well with blood and needles AT ALL, and he was a trooper. In the midst of all the excitement, I’d totally forgotten about this, and I hadn’t even noticed that he’d sat down in the chair at the end.

When they were all done, Claire kept begging to “Play? Play? Play?” with all the toys they’d brought in to use in the distraction. That’s when I noticed how pale he looked, and then I remembered how he hates situations like this. He did extremely well considering. Granted, he didn’t get to witness the blood spurting out all over the place and hold his bare hand over a gaping wound. But, he got to drive up to the house and see it surrounded by a fire truck and ambulance, and that would be pretty traumatic, too. I don’t know which would be worse, actually.

Anyway, we were at the hospital for a few hours, and it went quicker than we thought it would. Luckily, we got right in. When we were leaving, the waiting room was practically full! Looks like we timed that just right. We stopped to grab a bite to eat before going home, and Claire was fine at the restaurant. She’s going to be really sore today, so we stopped to get some Children’s Tylenol, and she picked out some Barbie Band-Aids.

I’m supposed to take her back to Children’s in five days to have the stitches removed. Running on pure adrenaline has left me utterly and completely exhausted. I’m so glad things turned out the way they did. It could have been so much worse. What a day.

Edited to add this picture of Claire and her stitches! Brushing her teeth in front of the mirror was enough of a distraction to keep her still enough to take the picture. For updates to this saga, check out the archives for the month of July.

Three stitches (on the outside), complete with gooped on Neosporin…

And, “I think I’ve aged seven years over the weekend” – also posted on July 1, 2007

I’m about ready to have a stroke just from watching Claire play in our death-trap of a living room. :) We thought we had everything “kiddie-proofed” in there, but apparently we were mistaken. Accidents happen, even when you think you’re prepared.

Thankfully, she’s napping right now, so I’m feeling a little calmer. Hopefully she doesn’t decide to jump out of the crib today. That would make the weekend complete! :)

You know what’s so weird about what she hit? If you’d look at all the furniture in our house, you’d think it would be the least of what would cause injury! Seriously, of the top five “dangerous items,” it doesn’t even make the list! It’s all upholstered. There are no hard edges showing. It has corners, but they look non-threatening. What you don’t see (until upon further inspection) is that there is no padding on the corners at the base of it, where she hit, and there is just a piece of wood covered with fabric.

Edited to add this picture:

See? It’s very soft and non-threatening…

She really wasn’t running inappropriately. Not to mention it’s practically impossible for her to not walk in some form of a run. :) We’ll figure something out.

I’m temped to make her a bubble-wrap suit and make her wear a helmet.

Just kidding.

Kinda.

Two and a half!

Today marks Claire’s 30-month birthday, and that means we’ve officially made it half-way through the Infamous Year Number Two!  Yeah!

For the record, she’s been a really good girl, for the most part.  We’ve had our challenges here and there, but we really can’t ask for anything better.  And, as with anything, some days are more challenging than others.  ;)

To mark this milestone and also prepare for our trip next week, I’ve decided to call in the professionals to do her hair.  I really wanted to grow out her bangs and have her hair all one length.  But, then reality stepped in and reminded me that until she’s old enough to keep the bows in or keep it behind her ear, it would be a constant battle.

I’m tired of battles.

So, today she got bangs!

There is a place near us that specializes in cutting children’s hair.  And, the price is really reasonable and, to be honest, I would have paid three times what they were charging just to keep my sanity somewhat intact.  (Don’t tell them that, or they’ll raise their prices, and then my sanity becomes even more expensive!)  ;)

All Done!

So, her bangs are wispy and the stylist did some face framing. I think it looks really good!

Afterwards, we changed clothes and met some friends at a park for a picnic.  Claire has gotten so brave and was exploring all over, and she wasn’t even afraid to go down the big slides!  She was playing so well with all the other kids, and had a great time playing.  When I think about how outgoing she is most of the time and how much fun she has, and then I look at the above pictures, I’m struck by how much she’s changed and how she’s turning into such an interesting little girl.

Part of me gets a little teary and I kinda miss my Baby Claire!  But then I realize how cool this stage is, too…and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

29-months old today!

28-months old today!

It’s hard to believe that Claire is 28-months old!! On one hand, that sounds like a lot. But, in the grand scheme of things, 28-months is just a drop in the bucket.

We went swimming yesterday with some friends, and today it snowed. Edited to add: And, now, this afternoon it’s sunny and almost 50! Welcome to March! ;)

Here are some pictures I took of Claire this morning.

I said, “Say cheese!” and she did. And, then she said, “See my cheese?” Even with the new camera, I’m too slow for a toddler. So…we get to see the cheese. Sorry. :)

And, you can see the snow outside. Too bad Daddy was leaving his skiing gear out overnight to “air out.” Oops. Now, it’s all inside “drying out.”

She’s such a diva…even in her jammies.

“Hey, Momma! Take a picture of me waving to Daddy!”

So, I did. ;)

February doesn’t have a 30

And, this year, it actually has a 29, which is pretty cool. Happy Leap Day!

I’ve been taking pictures of Claire on the 30th of every month since the day she was born (well, except for those pesky Februarys of years past). Today, she’s not 27-months old yet, but tomorrow, she already will be.

There is no 30 in February.
So, we’re taking her 27-month picture today! :)

Here are some pictures I took of Claire today, before she got up for the day. Daddy took the new camera to London to capture his adventure on film, so I’m using the ol’ reliable (read: slow) camera. :)

27-months old! 27-months old! 27-months old! 27-months old!

As you can see, we’ve reached a new level in picture taking. Now, not only is the subject overly aware of her picture being taken, but she is requesting to take the pictures. She not only tells me she wants the camera, but she has elaborate reasons for why she wants to take the pictures. You can see the on-going dialogue in today’s photo session.

At least the “Momma, I want the camera, please!” rhymes with “cheese!”…so the smiling face at the end is almost the same result.

;)

26-months old today!

I know it may seem kind of silly to post a picture of Claire every month on the 30th, but why not? :) It’s amazing how quickly she’s changing.

Claire’s First Haircut

Claire is 25-months old today! This means we’ve successfully completed one month with an Official Two Year Old. This is quite an accomplishment! :) She’s been really good, though, for the most part…so I really have no complaints.

Yesterday was a first for both Claire and Momma. Claire’s never had her hair cut, and I’ve never really cut anyone’s hair before. (Well, that’s not entirely true. I used to cut one of our friend’s hair, but it involved an electric razor set on a single number, and it was pretty simple. Let’s say I’ve never cut a girl’s hair with scissors before.) Until yesterday.

Daddy and I decided that it was time to cut off the mullet. In the right situation and with the right prepping, her hair looks pretty cascading down her shoulders, but at other times, the two uneven layers were starting to look funny. We both want to grow her bangs out, and eventually have her hair all one length, so the best place to start was by cutting off the back layer.

Originally, I was too chicken to even consider doing this myself. Trained professionals are, well, trained to do this kind of thing. But, after our lazy day, we were playing downstairs, and I realized how fun it might be to try to do this ourselves. Daddy agreed to play the part of the paparazzi while Momma tried her hand at cutting a toddler’s hair.

This was easier said than done, but we are happy with the results!

Here are some pictures of the big event. (You can click on the pictures to enlarge them. Clicking on the pictures a second time will make them even bigger.)

I think I did a pretty good job with no training and a dull pair of scissors. :)

Toddlers are a moving target. This is challenging when you’re trying to cut hair, but this is a good thing in that she moves too fast for most people to notice if any of it is uneven. ;)

More Birthday Pictures!

Claire had so much fun opening her presents this evening!

Everyone went out of their way to make Claire’s Second Birthday a very special event. She was thrilled with all of her gifts, and we’ll be exploring them all in more detail over the next month…until the next round of gifts. ;) Never fear; she has plenty to keep her occupied for a whole year.

Oh, and here is another picture of one of the butterfly cookies. Claire is holding it up so you can see how big it is:

Butterfly cookie!

Oops, this one has something wrong with her wing. I’d better eat the rest of her. ;)

Yes, Claire’s evening began with a butterfly cookie and ended with a piece of ice cream cake. It doesn’t get any better than that!! ;)

It looks like a castle full of kittens and princesses exploded in our living room. Needless to say, Claire is beside herself with joy.

Here are some pictures from tonight’s festivities:

Ride a Horsy
This is one of the gifts that Momma and Daddy gave Claire. You can’t tell by this picture, but she’s scared to death of it!
