Alive & Kicking. Well, With One Foot Anyway…

One of these is my sexy new footwear, & one of these is from Victoria’s Secret. Heh.

So, let’s see. A lot has happened since I posted last:

Visitors arrived to The Hotel Rasmussen, and Merry Holidays were had.
A New Year traipsed through our living room and looked at me sitting with my leg propped up and giggled.

What?

On the 21st of December, I had foot surgery. I’ve been recovering ever since.

I’ve got a bunch of things to share when the dust and glitter settles, and after Claire goes back to school on the 8th and I get my stitches out (hopefully that same day?  I’ve been denied once already, so I’m not getting my hopes up.)

Stay tuned!

Our First New Years…

As 2011 comes to a close with 2012 quick on its heels, I’m reminded of our very first New Years as a family of three.

It was tricky balancing a party hat on the head of a squirmy baby, but we did it.  It’s amazing to me how much has changed from that year (It was 2006! Claire was so tiny! …and look at my hair!) and how much has stayed the same.

May 2012 be all that you hope it can be and more.

Happy New Year!

Goodbye, 2009!  Hello, 2010!

Anyone else excited about getting our double-digits back?  My husband mentioned that to me the other day, and I realized that I’d finally gotten over the single-digit year.  But, he’s right…I’m glad the double-digit is back!  :)

On Twitter, people have been reminiscing about 10-years-ago.  Ten years ago, we were partying like we always did (and it was purely coincidental that it was 1999).  While at a New Year’s Eve Party, someone flipped the light-switch right at midnight, and we thought for sure all the terrible rumors about Y2K were true!  We had a great laugh over that.

Ten years ago, we were celebrating one full year in Colorado.  It was a big move for us, on so many levels, but it was the right one.  Have we really been here for 11 years??  It’s amazing how time flies.

Now, we have a totally different family dynamic than we did then.  We are no longer a family of two; we’re a family of three.

Two was awesome, and so is three.  Three is the magic number, after all.

I wonder what the next ten years will bring?

Speaking of the future, I will say this:  I’m SO excited about what 2010 will bring.  We have some AWESOME things in the works, and I can’t wait to share them.  I can only hope the next 10 years are as awesome as the 10 before it.

Happy New Year!!

All of the above!

This is a copy of our 2009 Holiday Letter!  (…that was mailed out on December 1st.)  Enjoy!

Happy New Year!

Handy Resolution Picker

I saw something similar to this on another website, and I thought it would make a nice, handy way to choose a resolution to focus on in The New Year.

This Handy Resolution Picker takes all the guesswork out of picking your resolution!  It’s all based on your favorite number!

I’ll warn you…there is some math involved, but it’s not too complicated, and the results are very helpful!

It just takes a few minutes.  Check it out!

WHICH RESOLUTION IS BEST SUITED TO YOUR PERSONALITY?

1) Pick your favorite number between 1-9.

2) Multiply by 3

3) Add 3

4) Multiply by 3 again (it’s okay to use a calculator…I won’t tell anyone.)

5) You’ll get a 2 digit number…

6) Add the digits together to obtain your score.

Now, scroll down to find out what your score means!

(Just keep scrolling…)

(and scrolling…)

(Are you still scrolling?…)

(No cheating and just picking one that looks good…this is scientific!  It’s based on numbers!  Let the numbers do all the work…don’t peek ahead and then try to get the answer you want!)

(Not that you would ever do such a thing…)

Now…with the number you got from above, you’ll see which resolution in the following list will be the best one for you!

WHICH RESOLUTION IS BEST SUITED TO YOUR PERSONALITY?

1.  Drink more water.
2.  Exercise more.
3.  Take a daily vitamin.
4.  Use a moisturizer.
5.  Live in moderation.
6.  Floss every day.
7.  Donate to a worthy cause.
8.  Travel to a brand new destination.
9.  Read The Casual Perfectionist every day.
10.  Use cloth grocery bags.

P.S. Stop picking different numbers. ;)

Happy New Year!

Photos From Years Past

As I was uploading (or is it downloading?) photos from my camera, I came across some photos from years past. I can’t resist posting these here!

You already saw how our New Years Eve celebration went this year (actually, last year. Ha!)…well, here is a picture of Claire at her very first New Years Eve Party!

Claire’s First New Years Eve Party!

Claire is one month old in this picture!

December 31, 2005, we hosted a New Years’ Eve Party at our house. We didn’t want to take a newborn out in the cold, but we wanted to ring in the New Year with the adults. Our friend (who hosted this most recent party) gathered up the party hats, grabbed some other friends, and they all descended on our house.

We had a great time!

In the above picture, we’re trying to balance a newly-adjusted to-fit-a-newborn’s-head party hat on Claire’s head. And, we succeeded!

Here is a picture of Claire from January 2006:

January 2006

Fast forward to the end of the year, and December 2006 was the roughest on record weather-wise for us. As I’ve mentioned before, our area got blasted with back-to-back blizzards, and we’d traveled to the Midwest between them for the holidays. By the time we got back home none of us were in any mood to be around any more people or do any more partying, so we celebrated quietly at home. It was an awesome way for exhausted travelers to ring in the New Year.

Here is a picture of Claire from January 2007:

January 2007

In the above picture, Claire is wearing a matching sweater and hat that was knitted by “Auntie M” for her before she was even born. The sweater and hat still fit, so you may see those again in pictures here and there.

I know it sounds cliché, but it’s true: time travels so quickly. I wonder what adventures 2008 will hold?

Ringing in the New Year

On New Year’s Eve, the three of us were invited to a friend’s house for a New Year’s Eve party. He lives with another family in a huge house in the mountains. The family was going to be out of town, and like many times in the past, he was hosting a big shindig. This was the first time we’d been invited as a “family of three.” Another family with a girl just a year older than Claire was also going to be there, so we knew that the three of us would have a good time.

Blizzardous high winds had closed the major interstates and highways around us the night before, and they were all still closed. The problematic road situations were just west of where we were going…so we thought we could make it. The drive up into the mountains was actually much calmer than we anticipated, and we made it without any trouble.

As soon as we arrived, Claire was in her element! She and the other little girl played and played! Claire brought part of her Princess Tea Set and Strawberry Cheesecake to share, and the other little girl brought the dress-up clothes. It was the perfect combination!

Clicking on it a second time will make it even bigger.

Party hat and honker
Here is Claire with her party hat and “honker” (as she called it). She actually figured out how to make that thing work by the time we left. Joy. ;)

Everyone had such a great time!

Claire and the other little girl went to bed at 9pm in separate rooms. Claire was able to use a borrowed pack-n-play that we’d set up in an unoccupied bedroom upstairs, and she went to bed without any fuss at all!

The adults continued with the ringing in of all of the New Years…all three of them. At 10pm, we celebrated with the East Coast people in the room. At 11pm, we celebrated for the Central Time people many of us had left behind, and finally, at Midnight, we rang in the New Year for the Mountain Time Zone. Staying up to ring in the New Year for the Pacific Time Zone was too ambitious, and Daddy and I quietly joined Claire shortly after Midnight…

Claire was ringing in the New Year in the best way possible…

sound asleep
…sound asleep.

Yes, this picture was taken shortly after Midnight, Mountain Time. No, the flash didn’t even make her wiggle. Oh, and the Panda and “Other Puppy” belong to the little girl who let us use her room (she and the rest of her family were ringing in the new year in another city). Claire latched on to them the moment she saw them when we were checking out where she’d be staying. Thankfully, I was able to distract her when we left, and Panda and “Other Puppy” are safe and sound in their rightful owner’s room!

The original plan was to stay the night and then go sledding with everyone the next day. So, we lugged all our snow gear into the house in anticipation of that. Well, things didn’t go as planned. Remember when I fell down the stairs in September? Neither had I. It didn’t even occur to me that sleeping on the floor wouldn’t be as comfortable as it used to be. We had a sleeping pad AND an egg-crate under our sleeping bags, so I thought I’d be fine. It didn’t even occur to me to bring my back-pain medication, because it really hasn’t bothered me for a couple months.

Apparently, the combination of being an old lady and having a delicate back do not mix with sleeping on a hard floor. Who knew?

Needless to say, I woke up with an incredible pain in my back. So, we altered our plans a little and made the trek back home after a large and gorgeous breakfast. I took some of my pain medication, a big nap, and then by the late afternoon, the three of us were able to enjoy some sledding in the back yard. (I have a feeling this was more our speed anyway…but don’t tell Daddy that. He really wanted to go sledding with the other big kids.) ;)

Sledding
Bundled up, in the snow, and ready to go!

Sledding

Sledding

Sledding
Momma pushing Claire down the hill on a different sled. It looks like Claire has rolled right off the sled, and she kinda did, but no toddlers were harmed in the making of this documentary; I swear! :) What you can’t hear is Claire screaming with joy, “Do it again, Momma! Do it again, Momma!” Granted, with a different caption, you’d get a different idea from this picture! You’ll just have to take my word for it. ;)

As you can see, Claire loved playing in the snow, and the three of us had a really good time!

So, that’s how we rang in the New Year! Food, friends, fun…it doesn’t get much better than that.

Happy New Year, 2008!

One Day Left

Well, if it was going to happen in 2007, it only has less than 24-hours to materialize. :) Yes, we made it to the end of 2007!

Looking back, 2007 was a very exciting year. Claire turned one at the end of 2006, so 2007 was full of new experiences. This year also marked the year I started a blog. I became one of those people, and I’m so glad I have an easy way to chronicle Claire’s childhood! (Feel free to poke around in the Archives or check out the different Categories on the sidebar.)

I continued working from home and tried to get back into my groove of working the equivalent of a full-time job from home while chasing a toddler. Just like the changes I made when doing my job with a newborn, I adapted. I tweaked my processes. Progress was made. I’m counting the year as a success. :)

My hubby not only worked his full-time job outside the home, he still had enough energy left over to do most of the cooking, cleaning and shopping. What would we do without him? By the time 2007 rolled around, it’s like he was already a pro at being a Daddy. Surviving another year in that role is quite an accomplishment for him, and one he made look easy.

We also tackled some major home improvement projects! Completing those was a huge relief. Maybe 2008 will be the year we take a break from those? A girl can dream, can’t she? (I say that, but it never fails that once the dust settles, we forget the pain and suffering and jump into another project.) Time will tell, I guess. :)

Amidst all the fun and chaos, we found time to travel to see friends and family. I’m sure 2008 will prove to be just as exciting!

Overall, we spent time doing the things we love with the people we care about, and 2007 was a good year.

Who knows what 2008 has in store for us? I can’t wait to see what adventures await!

So, enjoy the last day of 2007, and I’ll see you next year! ;)
