My LOST Time-Travel Theory

Spoiler alert.  If you haven’t watched the latest Lost episode (Jughead), you may want to check back here after you do!

I loved Wednesday’s episode, Jughead.  There are so many things revealed in this episode:  Desmond and Penny have a baby boy and they named him Charlie!  (Awwwww!) Charles Widmore was on the island with Richard!  Back in the 50s!  (*gasp*!!) Is “Ellie” (the woman I totally thought was a young Danielle Rousseau at first.  Oops!) really Ms. Eloise Hawking?  Widmore is Daniel Faraday’s benefactor!  “Richard has always been here.”  Indeed.  And, time keeps jumpin’ all over the place.

All good stuff.

So, after the episode, my mind was racing…and then something clicked.  I totally caught a hold of a time-travel theory and it made sense.  I was hoping I wasn’t dreaming it, and sure enough, I woke up yesterday with a clear picture still in my head.

I’ve got a theory to the time-travel, and I’m so excited to feel this calm feeling of understanding.  How long will it last?  Only until the next flash?  ;)

I’m going to try to share it with you, but without the help of a 3-D whiteboard, your eyes may glaze over and your nose may start to bleed.  Bear with me!

The Case of the Flaming Frogurt

How can Frogurt be shot and killed by a flaming arrow in 1954 and still get on the Oceanic 815 flight in 2004?  Doesn’t that create a paradox?

No, because he doesn’t get killed until after the plane crashes, and it just happens to be 1954 on the island when he gets shot by a flaming arrow.

Let’s say Frogurt was even unluckier than we thought and it was his 29th birthday on the day he was shot and killed by a flaming arrow.  The first time 1954 happened, Neil wasn’t on the island.  He wasn’t even born yet, and if he would have been, it would have probably been somewhere in the United States and not on some mystical island with magical properties.  The second time 1954 happened for Neil, he was on a wacky island; he’d already crashed in a plane.  The fact that he gets shot and killed by a flaming arrow in that version of 1954 doesn’t have any effect on the Frogurt who booked the flight on Flight 815, because it hadn’t happened yet.

He dies on his 29th birthday, regardless of when in time that is.

Confused yet?

Rules are rules.  Lost Rules are even more confusing.

Keep in mind we are playing by Lost Rules, which have been known to change slightly given their interpretation or knowledge-base of the viewer at the time.  Remember way back when we didn’t know flash-backs were possible?  Then, remember when we finally got a grasp of that and the writers threw flash-forwards at us?

Then Desmond’s consciousness got unstuck in time, and his brain nearly melted until he found his constant.

Your time-line marches forward, regardless of what the calendar says.

Well, here we are: another little piece to the puzzle.  On the island, people can get “un-stuck” in time.  Daniel reminds us that we can’t change the past, because it’s already happened.  It’s like our little ticker-tapes keep running, regardless of what the calendar says.  Luckily for us, the date on the calendar matches the time-stamp on our little ticker-tapes.  But, when you’re un-stuck in time, your ticker-tape keeps on a-tickin’, the roll of paper tumbling out of the machine into a nice little coil onto the floor, regardless of what the date is on the island.

For example…  And, for the record, I totally have this diagrammed on my desk, but showing you a photo of it would prove how crazy I’ve become.

On September 22, 2004, Oceanic Flight 815 crashes onto an island.  Lots of confusing stuff happens.

On Day 108 (or thereabouts, right?), some people leave, and some people stay.  For this example, I’m going to talk about four people:  Sawyer and Locke stay on the island and become un-stuck in time, and Jack and Kate escape and become part of the Oceanic Six, but they remain stuck in time.

On Day 109, Jack and Kate are continuing on the calendar that you and I know, the one that is the same as the ticker-tape.

On Day 109 for Sawyer and Locke, however, their ticker-tape clicks forward, but the calendar turns to the date that the Beechcraft crashed onto the island.  (Let’s just say it’s 2000, but I haven’t checked out any sources…I’m sure they have the exact date mapped out somewhere.)  Locke sees the plane crash and gets shot by Ethan.  He almost gets killed by Ethan, but time jumps just in time (ha! punny!).

Here’s where I hazard a guess…I totally think Ethan could have killed Locke and the only thing that would have been disrupted was The Grand Scheme Jacob and/or The Island has in place for John Locke.  Like Frogurt, Locke could have died in this version of 2000 and still gotten on the plane in 2004, because his death really hadn’t happened yet.

I don’t know what’s up with The Island or Jacob, I just claim to have a handle on the time-travel stuff. :)

You only have one body, and being on the island is the key. [Edited to add:  Okay, this one has been disproved with Some Like it Hoth.  Check out the update here!]

Also, it doesn’t matter where Sawyer and Locke were in the original version of 2000, because they weren’t on the island in 2000.  There aren’t two Sawyers or two Lockes running around.  There was one Sawyer in 2000, back when 2000 happened for him the first time, and one Sawyer in 2000 on Day 109.  (And the same goes for Locke.)  It’s only the island’s time-line that is being tapped into.

Anyway, without recapping the whole past episode, the island eventually flips to 1954.  Locke meets Richard Alpert and tells him to go visit him on the day of his birth, which won’t be for another 2 years in Real Island Time.  John’s ticker-tape is still ticking forward, even though the island is in 1954.

How Richard fits into all of this is still a mystery.  At first, in previous seasons, I thought he was traveling through time, but I am not so sure anymore.  This latest episode “Jughead” leads me to believe that Richard is tied to the island and tied to its time-line.  It was as though he looked up and the Island Calendar read 1956, so he traveled to the outside world and saw that John Locke was indeed born on that day in that hospital.  (This was before Desmond turned the fail-safe switch and before Ben turned the frozen donkey wheel and everything got all wonky, so I’m assuming that Island Time and Real World Time were the same back in 1956.  And, we know that Richard can travel to and from the island, as we’ve seen him do that before.)

Also, is Richard different from Ethan?  My guess is, yes.  I don’t know if Ethan “remembers” shooting John Locke in 2000, but Richard remembers talking to John Locke in 1954.  I have a feeling Richard is tied to the island in ways that will shock and amaze us.

So, back to my theory that you only have one body…(Who knew you’d need a theory like that!?  It just sounds so funny!)  I think the people unstuck in time (for example, Sawyer & Locke) cannot run into themselves on the island.  Personally, I think there is only one physical Sawyer & Locke, and they just happen to be in another version of the present.  [Edited to add:  Again, you win some; ya lose some.  Oh well!]

Those pesky writers.
But, I do think Sawyer & Locke can run into people who happen to be in that same time-frame but aren’t unstuck at the time.  (i.e. Kate & Jack respectively)  That’s why, in past episodes, Sawyer says funny things to Kate about waiting so long to see her, and why John tells Jack he’s “not supposed to do this.”  (Just because they can’t change what happens at that point in “time” doesn’t mean they wouldn’t try, or slip-up.  Sawyer would be relieved to see Kate, and Locke would try to warn Jack…)  All along, the writers could have been throwing in bits and pieces of the Unstuck-Sawyer and Unstuck-Locke!  And, we would have never guessed!

Those pesky writers!  I really wouldn’t put it past them!

But, keep in mind, we haven’t seen any of this really happen yet.  It’s just a theory of mine.  I just have always been bothered by that exchange by Kate and Sawyer, and what Locke says to Jack, and to me, this theory makes sense.

So, what happens now?

So, what happens when those who are un-stuck actually flip into a time when they were already on the island?  I’m assuming they flip into where their physical bodies were at the time.  Maybe?  And, if their subconsciousnesses (is that even a word?) are being addled like this, will it cause nosebleeds?  Do they need a constant like Desmond and Daniel Faraday?  Speaking of nosebleeds, Charlotte is in bad shape, and I think she’s either been to the island before, or someone directly related to her is there.

Time will tell, I guess.  (In more ways than one, eh?)

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again…I’m just glad to know who is in the coffin.  ;)

So, what do you think?  Do you have any theories?  How does this one sound?  I can’t wait until next week for more pieces of the puzzle!

Lost Observations: “Because You Left” and “The Lie”

Last year, the TiVO was barely cold before I started typing up my observations of the show.  I don’t do a true recap.  Therese at Tubular does an excellent recap.  You can check out her blog and other cool Lost links on the Links Tab above or by clicking on this link.

This year, I will still take notes (What!  Don’t laugh.), and I watch each one more than once (again, all that laughing is distracting…), but I may or may not get them posted right away.  I’m going to try to be calm about my obsession this year.  (Okay, even I’m laughing now…)

So, tonight the next installment of Lost is on, and I can’t wait!

Here are some of my notes from the last week.  If you haven’t seen the show yet, I would warn you about reading this…but you’ve probably already been spoiled somewhere else.

I mean, it’s been a week!  :)

My Questions, Comments and General Ramblings:

  • Daniel is at the very beginning!  He’s in a Dharma workers’ suit!
  • As I was watching, I was wondering if Jacob’s List (and/or Ben’s List) has anything to do with the Losties they’ve “seen” somewhere in time?  I mean, does Ethan remember seeing Locke in the jungle?  Time-traveling paradoxes always make my head hurt.
  • So, Widmore has been looking for the island for 20 years?  Interesting…how important is that?
  • I figured out that they were flipping through time before Daniel Faraday tried to explain it.  But, every time it flashed, I was curious to see “when” they’d be that time.  In a way, I felt like I was watching Quantum Leap!
  • Believe it or not, I shouted, “Desmond met Faraday!  Do the rules apply to him!?” at the screen, just before Daniel starts pounding on the hatch door.
  • Sayid isn’t working for Ben anymore?  What happened there?
  • Is John really dead?  Ben sidesteps the answer, and we need a true definition of “dead” before I’m willing to cast my vote.  ;)   And, I wonder if by the Losties going back, that can change?  Daniel said they couldn’t change the past, but what it John dies in an alternate future?  Maybe?  Who knows…
  • Richard Alpert gives Locke the compass and says, “I won’t know you when I see you again.”  At first, I wondered if he was referring to the objects he puts on the table in front of the young John Locke in “Cabin Fever” (a compass is one of them), but if I’m not mistaken, Richard knows John.  John doesn’t know Richard.  Thoughts?
  • Ben tells Jack that “John left” when in reality (what is reality anymore?) Ben is the one who left by turning the frozen donkey wheel.  Is Ben’s version significant?
  • Ana Lucia pulls Hurley over!  She mentions Libby!  Awwww.  :(
  • Why do they have 70-hours to do whatever they need to do, and where is Ms. Hawking?  Is she Daniel Faraday’s mother?  If not, who is she?
  • Poor Frogurt.  I mean, Neil.  ;)
  • I think my favorite part of the whole episode was when Hurley was describing what happened to his mother.  Hurley has always been seen as “the voice of the audience” and I’ve been in Hurley’s position…trying to explain to someone who has never watched Lost, just what the fuss is all about.
  • There were so many good lines in this episode!   I loved when Hurley’s mom said, “I believe you.  I don’t understand you, but I believe you.”  That pretty much sums up my feelings exactly.

So, are you watching tonight?

What was once LOST will soon be returned.

What’s that sound you hear?  Is it the smoke monster?  Is it the sound of an island disappearing from space and time?

No!  It’s the sound of Lost fans rejoicing!  Today is the big day!  Finally, Lost will return!

I’ve successfully avoided scheduling anything for tonight, because I already have a date!  With Sawyer!  Well, and the rest of the cast, too.

Yes, I’m recording the premier and I may or may not watch it again, more than once.  (You do the math on that…I’m not telling how many times I watch each episode.)

It’s embarrassing.
Don’t judge me.

I’ve written about Lost before.  I can’t help myself.  Without Six Feet Under or The X-Files, what’s a girl to do?  (And, yet, this show is nothing like either one of those two examples.)

It’s fun to be excited about a TV show again.  I love that feeling.

Needless to say, I can’t wait!  In the meantime, you can check out the other things I’ve babbled on and on about regarding this show:

You can click here to check out the Lost: The Show Category.

If you haven’t seen all The Missing Pieces, episodes, you should click here.

Or, you could also check out this nice re-cap of the seasons so far:

Therese at Tubular does a great job of re-capping!  Click here to refresh your memory.

So, tonight, we’ll get some answers and many more questions.  I’m expecting to be thoroughly entertained and utterly confused.

And, I’m okay with that.  I’m just so glad it’s back.  :)

LOST! It’s almost back!

In case you haven’t heard…guess what’s almost back!?

LOST!

Check out this cool thing I found!  (Click over from the FeedReader and be sure to check your volume…):

[Edited to say:  I had to remove the cool widget.  It was doing bizarre things to my feed.  Just so you know, if the girl I was in the 1990s ever stumbles upon these previous two sentences, she'll have NO IDEA what I'm talking about. ;) In the meantime, go to abc.com and look at the Lost page for cool stuff...]

Needless to say…I CAN’T WAIT!!  :)

Lost Observations – Season 4 Finale – “There’s No Place Like Home, Part 2”

Well, the end has come. And, actually, it’s the beginning. Eight long Lost-less months stretch out before us, and that’s a long time to wait!

I think Therese from Tubular (see my blogroll for some other cool Lost stuff) will be posting weekly recaps of Season Two’s episodes. (Check out her archives for the recaps of Season One.) What’s cool about these recaps, is she reviews them knowing what we know now in the show. I’m so curious to see how we’ll see things looking back through those 20/20 hindsight lenses. I mean, remember way back when we had no idea that time-travel was even a possibility on the show? A second look at those previous shows will be very interesting!)

So, where to begin? As always, I won’t recap this show. Others do that very well. I will, however, use this as my crazy scientist-like notebook for scribbling notes to my future self. ;)

And, you all know the drill. If you don’t want to know what happened in last night’s episode, don’t read this.

Blah Blah Blah
Obligatory Spoiler Alert Complete!

Wow. I’m still reeling. WE FINALLY KNOW WHO IS IN THE COFFIN. Yes! From the very first time we saw the coffin, I was curious. Is it Ben? Is it Locke? Is it Michael? Is it someone we haven’t met yet? Are they going to keep us in suspense forever? Then, right as we were getting to the end of this episode, I was practically shouting “It’s BEN! Ohmygosh, I just know it’s BEN!” at the screen…right up until he startled Jack. Even then I wasn’t convinced that it wasn’t going to be Ben’s body in the coffin. I’m SO GLAD we find out who it is. Now, the question, is how did HE get off the island??

Oh, there’s so much left of the story! I can’t wait!

I must say I was pleased to see that I was right in my thinking about Ben traveling to Tunisia from the Orchid station. I’m glad we got to see how he injured his arm. It’s a great twist that that is how he left the island and that he couldn’t return from that point.

I loved the fact that there were humorous lines sprinkled throughout the episode. My favorites include Ben’s line about the “time-traveling bunnies” and the fact that John didn’t know what Anthuriums looked like. (I’d actually said out loud during the last episode that it’s lucky Ben didn’t give me those instructions, because I had no idea what an Anthurium looked like! Ha!)

And, when Sayid crept into Hurley’s room, and Hurley was playing Chess, I said, “Well, there’s poor Hurley, playing Chess with Charlie…” Only we found out it was Mr. Eko! Ha!

When Sawyer jumped out of the helicopter, I looked at my hubby and said, “My boyfriend had better be a good swimmer, or I’m going to be very sad next season.” He scoffed. Imagine my delight when Sawyer swam up onto the beach. “Oh look! He lost his shirt. How awful…” ;) I’m glad my hubby humors me.

Speaking of my hubby, he was the first to point out that shooting Keamy in his flack-jacket shouldn’t have killed him. So, neither of us was surprised when he stumbled down to the Orchid. He was, however, quite hung up on the fact that Keamy’s monitor was still working so far underground. I swear, he muttered for half an hour about how that was so unrealistic. Something about a signal underground, etc. When I asked him why time-traveling bunnies and humans, moving islands, and ghosts were okay, he rambled on and on about how fantasy things are fine, but unrealistic technological things bug him. Fair enough.

He was also irritated by the whole bomb sequence. We were confused as to why they just couldn’t pull all the wires out of the C-4 when the battery was frozen. I told him it was probably just a plot-point…I mean, if the bomb didn’t explode, how would the freighter blow up? ;)

Speaking of which…poor Jin. I’d had a feeling that Sun’s tears at his grave were real, even if the dates on his tombstone weren’t. :(

And, Miles and what he “knows” just gets creepier and creepier. And, what did Charlotte mean about where she was born?

I was so glad to see Penny and Desmond reunited! But, when Jack warned Desmond about not letting them find him, I was wondering how difficult that would be with Widmore being Penny’s father. Wouldn’t they see each other at the wedding? Just kidding.

I was afraid that something horrible was going to happen to Frank Lapidus or Desmond, because we know who the Oceanic Six are.

Okay, this is an aside that I just have to share. This is so funny. I told my hubby I was putting this in the blog, because I just can’t pass this up. And, I’m not making fun of him, per se…it’s just that this pretty much sums up a majority of the conversations we have:

We’re watching the show, and we’re at the scene where the Oceanic Six are in the chopper with Frank and Desmond. I am really concerned for Desmond’s safety because anything is possible at this point. My hubby says, “Oh my gosh! The final one is Desmond!”

And, I was like, “What? No he’s not! We already know the six! And, he wasn’t on the plane!”

He said, “No! We don’t know the final one, and now we do! It’s Desmond!”

By this time, I’m really confused, so I pause the TV. Then, it hits me. “So, you’re saying Desmond is the final Cylon?”

“Yes!” he shouts…so happy that he’s figured it out. “Now we know the final one!”

The funniest thing about that? He was serious. He’d somehow slipped into Battlestar Gallactica mode and gotten the Oceanic Six mixed up with the Final Five Cylons.

After getting him back on track, he still thinks it would be an awesome twist. He, of course, thinks it would be great to mix Cylons in with whatever is going on with the island. Imagine how many twists and turns there would be then??

I guess you had to be there…or at least be a BSG fan to even understand why that conversation makes me laugh. :)

Okay, back to this show…

It looks like we have a lot to look forward to next season. What did Sawyer tell Kate before he kissed her and jumped into the ocean? (We know from the last episode that Kate was doing something for him. What is it?) Why does John seem to know more than he should, what with all his “you’re not supposed to do this and you’re not supposed to do that” stuff. How many times has this island moved? How did John get off the island? It’s interesting that Sun is working with Widmore now…or is she?

I do know one thing: if next season is anything like this one, it will be well worth the wait!

Lost Observations – “There’s No Place Like Home, Part 1”

Well, I don’t know about you, but the title of this latest episode of Lost makes me want to close my eyes and tap my heels together. :)

What a great episode. There are only two hours left! Then, we have to wait 9-months! Gee, that would be plenty of time to hide a pregnancy from the rest of the world and then come home with a really big 5-week old baby. ;)

Well, ya win some and ya lose some. I was right about Aaron being one of the Oceanic Six, but I was wrong about what the cover story was going to be. Kate gave birth to him? She was six months pregnant when they crashed? Mmm-hmm. I guess it’s possible. John’s mother was six months pregnant and was able to hide her pregnancy with a poodle skirt. And, there *are* women out there who don’t show until later, if at all. So, I’ll just have to suspend my disbelief on that one.

(I mean, we all know the truth…I’m just trying to see this from an outsider’s perspective.)

And, before I had Claire, I was really horrible at guessing how old a baby was by how big he or she was…and I still am. But, does Aaron look 5-weeks old to you? No? Yes? Maybe? Okay, I’ll let that one slide, too.

I do believe that Sun could pull off the “well, I was pregnant before I flew and didn’t know it” line. She herself didn’t know if Jin was the father of her baby until Juliet did the ultrasound, so that is very plausible.

Hurley not losing weight is actually the most unrealistic part of the story, but he was able to laugh his way through that.

And, it was nice to see good ol’ #108 make a reappearance. That’s the number of days they were on the fake island in the cover story before they set sail on the boat that washed up. So, is Day 103 the date of the “typhoon” really the date of the Tsunami that happened in real life? I’m sure someone has checked that by the time I even post this… ;)

So, we know the cover story…what’s the real story? I really hope we find out next week.

And, did they say anything about the supposed plane they found at the bottom of the trench…the one that was planted by Widmore (or so we’ve been led to believe)? Are we to believe that these six (or eight) people got out of the plane before it sunk to the bottom? Is that the story? Or, does something wacky happen with that whole thing in the space/time continuum, when/if they move the island? Did I miss something?

WHO IS IN THE COFFIN!? Just kidding. :)

Let’s talk about some shocking and not so shocking things we learned in this episode. Ben is still in charge. I’m really not surprised. He always has a plan. We know this.

Claire’s mom came out of her coma!? She’s the one who drops the bombshell on Jack about him being Claire’s ½ brother and therefore Aaron’s uncle!? Wow! I did not see that one coming.

Sun bought the controlling portion of Daddy Paik’s company!? Wow. Go Sun! She said that two people were responsible for Jin’s death, and her father was one of them. Who is the other? My hubby thinks she was referring to herself, but I didn’t get that vibe from her. I could be wrong; I’ve been wrong before.

Also shocking was my own sadness for Kate when they got off the Coast Guard plane and she had no one there. I’ve never really liked Kate, and I actually felt a little twang of sadness for her, clutching baby Aaron, all alone.

But, in most of the rest of that flashforward, I’m actually happy for the survivors. They appear happy. We know it’s short-lived. We know it doesn’t end well for Sayid or Jack or Hurley, and we don’t really know yet what happens to Sun or Kate or Aaron in the future. But for a moment, they really do appear happy.

And, then the numbers make a (maybe not so) coincidental appearance, and Hurley starts his descent. The numbers really do make him crazy.

And, I guess I shouldn’t say “we know it doesn’t end well,” because we don’t really know where it all ends. This is all just the middle…or the beginning of something much larger.

And, does anyone else wonder why Daniel has all of these things scribbled in his notebook? Is this from the past? It doesn’t look like it’s from a briefing of what’s going to happen on the island before their mission, because he has formulas scrawled all over the place. Or, maybe that’s just how crazy physicists take notes in a meeting. ;)

So, I can’t wait to read all the buzz online about this episode. (Check out my blogroll for some cool Lost sites.) I love getting more and more of the story even though each piece of the puzzle brings us closer to the end.

Lost Observations – “Cabin Fever”

Wow. I don’t even know where to start, and my head is still spinning. I definitely have to see this episode again!

I can’t believe we are almost to the end of the season. I feel like we were given a glimpse at so many answers only to be bombarded with more questions. And, do we really understand the answers that were given?

I love Lost. Have I mentioned that lately?

As always, I won’t recap the show, as there are sites out there that do that quite well. Check out my blogroll for some cool sites to check out. Here are some of my observations, questions, and comments regarding “Cabin Fever.” I’ll change it up a bit and use bullet points this week.

Here we go…shall we?

  • I think it’s pretty obvious that The Island doesn’t want John to die, and it never has.
  • The never-aging Richard Alpert (and Mittelos aka “Lost Time”) makes an appearance a few times in John’s flashbacks. Interesting! So, have they always been trying to recruit him from the beginning, or is Richard time-traveling from a point farther in the future to try to get John? Or, does that even matter? And, the bigger question is why?
  • What is the significance of the items that Richard Alpert shows John: Baseball Glove, Vial of Sand, Book of Laws, Compass, Knife, Comic Book? Which one should he have chosen? Richard said it would have already belonged to him. Thanks for being so clear about that, Richard. I think my head hurts. Is my nose bleeding?
  • John has never heard the story of Horace, has he? He doesn’t know that he’s the man that brought Ben and his father to the island, right? There is something very “real” to the visions/dreams that people have on the island. I wonder how all that works.
  • Horace said he’s been dead 12 years. How does that work with Alex’s age? If he died in “the purge,” and that was 12 years ago, that would have to have been in 1992, right? (2004 – 12) But, Ben supposedly kidnapped Alex when she was a baby, right?
  • If I’m not mistaken, Richard Alpert talked to John on the hillside in the last season. He gave him a file on Sawyer (James) so that Locke could “convince” him to kill the “real Sawyer” (John’s father). Why wouldn’t John remember him from his childhood? Had that not happened yet? Or, could it be something as simple as he just didn’t remember him? It would be hard to even consider him to logically be the same person, considering the non-aging factor, right? I guess that’s possible. (as possible as time-travel, polar bears in Tunisia, and a smoke-like monster on an island that may or may not exist.) ;)
  • Speaking of Smokey…did you catch him in the picture young Locke drew? Spooky.
  • Is Richard Alpert working with Mr. Abaddon, or are they working for separate entities?
  • I can’t believe Claire showed up in Jacob’s cabin! Actually, I can believe it. I joked about that last week. Is she dead? Is she alive? Either way, she didn’t seem like the Claire we know and love.
  • We’ve seen Christian in Jacob’s chair before. This time, it didn’t require a quick trigger finger over the pause button on TiVO to see him. He “speaks for Jacob.” Interesting. And, move the island? What…?? I can’t wait to see how they pull that off.
  • And, I guess we know that the doctor met a rather unfriendly demise. Well, we assumed that last week when his dead body washed up on shore. Now we know that the Freighter People weren’t lying about the doc being fine. He just hadn’t been killed yet. Right. That’s not confusing at all. ;)

Well, I’d better wrap this up. I can’t wait to read all the buzz about this episode online, and I can’t wait until next week! :)

Lost Observations – “Something Nice Back Home”

Well, this was another great episode of Lost. As always, this isn’t a complete recap of the show…this is just my notes so that I can look back longingly over the next hiatus and not forget where we are. :)

Let’s get right to it; shall we?

I loved that Jack was reading Alice in Wonderland to Aaron. This has been a major theme throughout the show. My hubby was talking through this part (again), so I can’t wait to watch it again and catch all of what was said about “who I am” etc.

I know I’m either supposed to squeal with joy that Jack and Kate are together at this particular time in the “future,” or be sad that she’s not with Sawyer, but to be honest, I don’t really care about that whole love triangle. *GASP* There. I said it out loud. To me, the only true love story is that of Penny and Desmond and all the other love triangles are to entertain us.

That being said, it’s interesting that we know that Jack and Kate aren’t “together” when Jack loses it and starts screaming they have to go back. Who knows how it will all end? That’s the beauty of Lost.

What is Kate “doing for Sawyer”? And, is that true? Does it have to do with his daughter, Clementine? I don’t trust Kate, and I never have. Neither does Jack, deep down, and sadly, that’s part of his downfall…

Of course, one could argue that I feel this way about the love triangles because I want to keep Sawyer for myself. Yes, this is true. I admit it. He’s been my boyfriend for years now. I do love how protective he is being of Claire and Aaron (and even Hurley…). I think it’s great that the writers are getting us to really like Sawyer, and I fear that he’ll be ripped from our grasp soon. :( Then again, Kate and Jack were talking about Sawyer as though he were still alive, so hopefully he’ll be okay. ;)

Some interesting things I noticed about this episode, and I’ll be on the lookout to see what others thought:

I didn’t see an appendectomy scar on Jack at the beginning of this episode. They don’t make mistakes like this. Maybe I missed it?

What did Hurley mean when he said they were all dead and they never really got off the island? Is that just crazy talk? Usually, there is some truth to what Hurley says…

Why did Dan ask Charlotte about where the power is coming from? Does that mean that The Tempest really isn’t a power station after all?

It sounds like Claire had been hallucinating because of the explosion. (I’d heard that they had to chop out some of that from the last episode due to time constraints.) It would be interesting to see what she’s been seeing.

Speaking of which, now, four people have “seen” Christian on the island: Jack, Hurley (in Jacob’s cabin), Claire and Miles.

Two cryptic messages have been associated with the raising of Aaron. Basically, by my calculations, Claire is supposed to and Jack is not.

I can’t wait to see where Claire has been taken (went willingly?), and I hope they don’t leave us hangin’! I’m hoping she’s having tea with her father in Jacob’s cabin, but I can’t see her leaving Aaron behind like that.

We have all these questions, but, it does appear as though we got some answers in this episode…at least about Danielle and Karl. Poor Danielle and Karl.

So, basically, I loved this episode, and I come away from it with some overlying ideas: Jack desperately wants things to be perfect, but he distrusts Kate. He has the perfect life “back home,” but things will never be truly perfect with whatever is happening (happened?) on the island hanging over his head. By his comment at the end, he knows that Aaron is his nephew, and because we saw Claire with her father on the island, I have a feeling this information is coming out soon. Jack said that Sawyer “chose” to stay, but I think we’ll find that it’s much more complicated than that.

Ooooh, I can’t wait to see what happens next! :)

Lost Observations – “The Shape of Things to Come”

It’ssssssssssssssss baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! After a five-week hiatus, Lost is back!! I guess this is a good thing. I mean, OF COURSE this is a good thing, but on Week One of the hiatus, I woke up all excited because “It’s Thursday! Lost is on!” and then reality smacked me in the head. Lost wasn’t on. I had to wait five weeks. Week Two rolled around, and I reminded myself on Wednesday that Lost wasn’t going to be on tomorrow. (Remember way back when Wednesdays were a day of pure joy because Lost was on Wednesdays? But I digress.) …and Thursday came and went, and I only twitched a little. By Week Three, I was pretty much cured. I didn’t even think about Lost. But, then Week Four got me all excited again. One more week!

And, now, it’s here. My addiction has been renewed. Things will come to a crashing halt in May, and it may take most of June for me to recover. But, until then…I’m so glad it’s back!

As always, if you don’t want to be spoiled, and you haven’t watched “The Shape of Things to Come” yet, please mark this post to read after you do!

… Are you still here? …

Okay, I admit it. I dig spoilers. I totally watched the three little clips put out by ABC to all the online entertainment sites.

… Still? …

And, all it did was get me more excited for the show. They didn’t really give away anything I hadn’t already guessed for myself. One of the clips was a little disturbing, but I was hoping I didn’t see what I thought I saw, but I’d prepared myself for the worst…just in case it wasn’t just creative editing to lead us in the wrong direction.

… There’s no going back after this …

Ready?

Okay, now that we have that obligatory warning out of the way…

;)

Like I’ve said before, I won’t recap the whole show. But watching Lost always leaves me with questions and comments and observations and I think this is a great place to get all that out. I love reading all the other recap sites and seeing the screen shots, so check out some cool links in my Blogroll.

This episode was great! And, I see why they moved it to a later timeslot. Claire, our toddler, loves watching Lost, but she had to go to bed before it came on. Honestly, I’m glad. There were some pretty heavy and disturbing things in it. I knew (or was hoping) that Ben was bluffing and wasn’t as evil as he wanted to sound when the people from the freighter were holding Alex hostage. His reaction when he said goodbye to her tells me that he really was devastated, and whether or not he is her biological father, he loved her.

Speaking of which…if Ben is traveling around in time, who’s to say he didn’t travel back in time and hook up with Danielle Rousseau? What if Ben really is (was?) Alex’s father? Yes, this is very Terminator, with a splash of Star Wars, but it really made me wonder. It was like he was saying what we wanted to hear…but what if it was only partially true? What if he really was her biological father?

How did Widmore change the rules? And, can we see what they are/were, please? What did he mean by “it was always my island”? Who really killed Nadia and why? Are we to believe that Sayid was “rescued” from the island as one of the Oceanic Six, found Nadia, married her, suffered through her death and then started working for Ben?

What did Ben mean when he said he “couldn’t” kill Widmore? Is this more of “the island won’t let you die” stuff? Is that why Claire survived the explosion? The island wants her to live? (I realize it’s not over yet…and anything could happen to her…)

WHO IS IN THE COFFIN!? Sorry…I got carried away. ;)

I’m also curious as to when Ben did his little time-travel (not unlike a polar bear?) to Tunisia? If you notice, his arm was hurt, so I wonder where that fits into island time? October 21, 2005 is interesting… I need to see a timeline of events. I’m sure another rabid fan of Lost has created one. :) And, speaking of things the fans notice, I had a feeling Dan was lying about what the Morse Code said, and I’m so glad Bernard translated for us! (It was nice of him to save us the trouble of writing all the digits down and translating it for ourselves.) :) …which leads us to what happened to the poor doctor in that little wrinkle of time between the freighter and the island?

And, I can’t wait until they find Jacob again and we learn a little more about Smokey.

My two favorite lines of the evening were Daniel saying, “When is a relative term” and what Hurley said at the very beginning of the show: “Australia is the key to the whole game.” Hmmmm…interesting. :)

I can’t wait to read all the recaps and buzz online about this episode, and needless to say, I can’t wait for next week!

Lost Observations – “Meet Kevin Johnson”

I love Lost, but this latest episode just wasn’t as exciting as the others have been this season. Maybe it will grow on me after I read more about it and watch it again? To be honest, I’ve never liked Michael or his character. I never understood or appreciated the relationship he did or didn’t have with Walt. I keep waiting for them to explain more about Walt and his powers, and I’m getting impatient. There just has to be more to this story…right?

And, after the shenanigans last week with the mixture of Flash Forwards and Flash Backs, I didn’t even try to figure out the time-frame of Michael’s reality. It became pretty clear pretty quickly that it was a Flash Forward, though. (Well, not really a true Flash Forward, more of a Flash Middle? Post-crash, Pre-rescue.) And, I’m glad they answered some questions, but I still have some more.

For instance, Michael and Walt followed the compass bearing 325 in that tiny boat and “found rescue.” Where? Who rescued them? They somehow got to New York without anyone realizing who they really were? What was their cover story? “Rescue” couldn’t have been very far away if they were in such a tiny boat. Did they reach one of Ben’s freighters? I mean, if he was organized enough to get “Kevin Johnson” a place on Widmore’s freighter, he may have his own out there too, right? A man with that many passports, oodles of foreign currency and a secret lair could easily have a rescue freighter. I’m just sayin’… :)

And, let me get this right…The Island won’t let Michael kill himself? Does that apply to others as well? What about Jack? I wonder what would have happened had Jack jumped off the bridge? And, others have died, so does that mean The Island was in control of that too, or does this little “feature” only apply to people who leave the island? And, that leads me to believe that whoever is in the coffin wasn’t put there by his own hand…right? Unless The Island wanted that person to die? Oh wait…does it only disallow suicide and not murder? Excuse me while I get a Kleenex…I think my nose is bleeding. ;)

Speaking of questions I really want answered, WHO IS IN THE COFFIN!? Sorry…just had to get that off my chest. ;)

Michael is obviously a tortured soul, and that kinda makes me happy. Shame on me! (And, yes, I was extremely happy to see Sayid rough him up a little.) :) What’s confusing about some of that is that Sayid turns Michael over to the Captain as a traitor, but we know that Sayid ends up working for Ben in the future, too. I really wonder what happens to force him to do that.

Also, I must say, I knew last season what Mr. Friendly meant when he told Kate she “wasn’t his type.” It’s nice to see my instincts were correct. ;) Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

And, now, according to Tom, Widmore is the one who supposedly put the airliner at the bottom of the ocean. And, last week, the Captain said that Ben put the airliner at the bottom of the ocean. Would there really be such a blatant paper-trail, regardless of who did this?? I think it’s safe to assume that “Trust No One” applies to more than just The X-Files. Where is Smoking Man when you need him!? And, I’d be the first to tape a big ol’ X in my window if I thought it would do any good. ;)

Hmmm…The Temple. What kind of “sanctuary” is it exactly, and why does it only apply to people like the Others? Did Ben know that Danielle and Karl would be killed in their attempt to reach it? (And, are they really dead? It’s so hard to tell these days…) ;) Has Alex been taken by ‘hostiles’ or by Ben’s people? Or are Ben’s people hostile? (He told John that if his people wanted him, they’d come get him. We just don’t know what to believe. Ben is so sneaky. Even liars tell the truth sometimes, which is what makes them such good liars…it’s figuring out what those times are that’s the hard part.)

Did you catch the ABC Promo Department’s message listing off the Oceanic Six? Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Kate, Aaron and Sun! Yea!! It’s always good to see when my calculations are correct…

But, we have to wait until April 24th for a new episode of Lost…Boo! In the meantime, check out the Lost Category or other cool links in my blogroll.

It’s going to be a long five weeks! :)
