Plan C

Hordes.
Swarms.
Oodles.
Many, many, many children are on Spring Break in our area.

This is good in that Claire and I could spend time with one of my friends and her two girls, and it’s bad in that the plans we had were disrupted by the shear numbers of people on Spring Break. It’s a Catch-22 of sorts.

One of my friends and her two girls (a six year old and a three year old) had invited us to the Zoo. Because the girls were on Spring Break, my friend had taken a week of vacation from work as well. We planned on meeting at the Zoo on Wednesday. She was leaving her house at Noon, and we were leaving our house at Noon, and we should both reach the Zoo by 12:30, with plenty of time to spare.

Claire was SO EXCITED. She could hardly contain herself. Polar Bears! Seals! Tigers! She’d clap every time she thought of it.

So, after confirming our plan of attack by phone that morning, my friend and I set off to the Zoo from different directions. I’ve never driven there by myself, but it was so simple, and I made it with no problems at all! I can see it! All we have to do is park. I see the sign that says “Buses” and because we’re not a bus, I keep driving. But, what’s this? Why are there orange pylons blocking the entrance? Why is there a flagger directing people to keep moving? What’s going on?

My phone rings.

Normally, I don’t answer my phone in the car, but I know it’s my friend, and this is one of those exceptions that is hard to avoid. I answer.

“Where are you?” she asks.

“Uh, I’m here…but they won’t let me in! All the entrances are blocked! So, I’m just following this long line of cars…” I said.

“Me too. I’m actually stopped. I’m going to ask what’s going on,” she said.

I could hear her talking to the crossing guard. No one is being let in. It’s full. Once a car leaves, one will be let in. That’s the best they can do.

Great.

She comes back on the line, and we discuss our options. By this time, I’ve turned left in hopes of getting back to where I came from…hoping for a place to turn around. There is none. I’m trapped in a stream of cars ahead and behind me. All the streets are jam-packed full of cars. There are no parking spots left. This is madness.

I think I’m in a park now? It’s full, too. There are no parking spots here either. And, the ones left are being snapped up left and right, and everyone is making their way to the Zoo on foot. That just doesn’t seem like a good plan. I mean, if there is no parking, do ya think it may be a little crowded? That sounds like a fabulous idea. Not.

We both decide to get off the phone. We’ll do Plan B. A park by your house or mine? She chooses mine. There is a cool park by our house, and we can both go to our house and walk there. She’s already on the main road and will head there now.

I hang up and try to figure out where I am and how to get back to where I need to be. None of this area is familiar. After making a few decisive turns, I realize I’m back behind the Zoo. I work my way out to the main road. As I’m waiting at the light, I’m thinking about the best way back to our house.

Then, I remember that of the three major exits to get to my house, all three streets are under construction…at least from this highway system.

I call my friend again.

“You’re taking this Interstate, right? Whatever you do, don’t take The Second Street,” I warn her. “Northbound was at a total standstill on the way here, which was 20-minutes ago. I doubt it’s cleared up. There’s construction and they have a flagger! And! Don’t take The First Option. I can’t vouch for it. Up until last week, it was all jacked, due to construction, so I’ve been avoiding it like the plague. But, The Third Way has construction, but it’s totally doable. I’m taking it. I would have taken that this morning, but I didn’t know about the construction on The Second Street.”

She thanked me for the warning. The light changed, and I ended my call.

As soon as we got back on the Interstate, Claire realized we were headed the wrong way. “I don’t wanna go home, Momma! I WANNA SEE POLAR BEARS!”

Poor thing. I explained that the Zoo was full and that we’d have to go another time. It was hard to curse Spring Break, because that was the reason we even had the option to see the Zoo today with my friend. *sigh*

The closer we got to the house, the more fervent her pleas became. She did NOT want to go home! I tried to explain to her that we weren’t really going home; we were just meeting our friends there, and then we were going to the park! The park by the lake! You like the park by the lake!

We see my friend waiting in front of our house, so Claire starts to realize that I’m not just tellin’ stories. I pull into the garage, and we get our things unloaded. The five of us head down the hill to the lake.

The sight that awaited us was unbelievable, and I’ve never seen so many kids at this park in my life. The times Claire and I go, there are maybe four or five kids there. There were TEN TIMES that amount!!

Spring Break…you’re really starting to chap my hide.

But, I remind myself that without Spring Break, we probably wouldn’t be able to see my friend and her girls…

But still! This is madness.

We leave the park before two of our little ones were trampled in the melee. The six year old was doing a good job holding her own against all the “big kids,” but it was getting to be ridiculous. Time for Plan C. We decide to go back to our place and play with Claire’s Toy Store and then play with the bubbles outside in the backyard. Afterwards, we watched three little exhausted girls eating ice cream and realized that although it was a Plan C, it was an Awesome Plan C.

And, we couldn’t have planned it any better. :)

What’s the difference between inlaws and outlaws?

Question: What’s the difference between inlaws and outlaws?
Answer: Outlaws are wanted.

Buh-dum-bum Ching!

This joke makes me laugh. I’d love to take credit for it, but it’s one that my father-in-law told me years ago. After I laughed, I said, “Heyyy! I’m not sure if I should be offended by that!” He just laughed even harder. “You know, you’re my inlaw…so it applies to you, too,” I reminded him with a smile.

Fun stuff.

All kidding aside, I’m really lucky when it comes to inlaws. They’re not overbearing or demanding or judgmental, and aside from the occasional unannounced visit, I really can’t complain. (And even then, we put them to work when they’re here, so any visit, announced or not, always seems to work in our favor.) ;)

So, why bring them up today? Well, they’re on their way!

They winter down south and always stop here on their way back to the Midwest. It usually coincides with my birthday (which is tomorrow: hint. hint.), and that is always nice. This year, the timing is especially welcomed because my hubby is still in London, and Claire misses him terribly. Seeing Daey and PaPa will be a nice break in the routine for her, and should hold her over ‘til his arrival stateside on Friday.

They were supposed to be here yesterday, but they delayed their trip by one day due to the weather. Claire was so excited to see them, and luckily, her concept of time is still a bit mushy. After their phone call telling us of the change in plan, I switched from “guess who’s going to be here today!” to “guess who’s coming tomorrow!” without so much as blinking an eye, and she accepted the new reality without missing a beat.

Oddly enough, because of the timing of everything, they won’t be able to see my hubby! We just couldn’t get the schedules to line up this time, especially with their obligations at home and my hubby’s impromptu business trip to London.

But, in reality, we know they’re not really here to see us. *ahem* ;)

And, I wouldn’t have it any other way. :)

Momma is trying to get the Kitchen assembled as the Ballerina wastes no time starting to cook (both gifts listed below).

Hand-knitted rabbit hat

Here is a close-up of the Rabbit Hat (as listed below). What you can’t really see is that the ties have carrots (like the ones on the top of the hat) knitted onto the ends of them.

Everyone was so generous to us this year, and from the sounds of it, everyone enjoyed the gifts that we gave to them as well. It was another successful gift-giving exchange!

In no particular order, here is a list of Claire’s loot:

Claire’s Gift Card, Target Gift Card, money, Wild Animal Baby Magazine Subscription, a Grinch Christmas Tree Ornament, four books, a coloring book with crayons, box of fruit bars, bag of dried fruit, numbers/letters/shapes that stick to the bathtub walls when wet, a mesh bag (in the shape of a turtle) for all her bathtub toys, play-doh set (complete with tools), a kitchen ensemble (complete with sink, fridge, microwave, stove top, blender, and a double oven) and many play food sets (some that you can pretend to cut with faux knives and then put back together with Velcro), dollhouse and two room set-ups, a princess tea set, a dress/turtleneck outfit w/matching purse, hand-knitted hat (complete with rabbits and carrots – see above), and a ballerina outfit.

Whew. I think that’s it…but with a toy store explosion like that, it’s quite possible I missed an item here or there. If I did, I’m sure we will find it over the next few days as she re-discovers all these cool toys. (Some of the food sets haven’t even been opened yet! We’re trying to make this experience last as long as it can!)

I’m hoping to get official Thank Yous out in the mail soon. They’ve been ordered and should be here shortly. (I’m doing something similar to what I’ve done in years past, and it’s a surprise.) ;)

In the meantime…Thanks to all!! Now, I’d better get back to work. Because of an impending storm (which actually seems to have arrived today!), our guests have left us.  Luckily, Daddy will be here to keep the Ballerina Chef entertained while I at least pretend to work today. ;)

Back to work

Well, technically, I’m working today. Realistically, I’m rather unmotivated. I worked really hard last week before the holiday to set things up so that today could be a lazy day. So, I think I’ll be taking advantage of that. Tomorrow, I’ll pay for it, but I’m having too much fun today to really care. :)

Claire, on the other hand, is working hard. She’s currently serving my brother-in-law meals that she’s made by hand in her new kitchen. It’s really comical watching a big, burly welder-dude drinking pretend tea out of a faux-delicate princess cup. ;)

Next, he’ll be helping her move furniture around in her brand-new dollhouse. Moving furniture is definitely more his style. :)

The Night Before Christmas

Well, there’s no better day to post what I found in my box of treasures!

The Night Before Christmas from Christmas 1976
You can click on the images to make them larger. Clicking on them a second time will show even more detail.

If you look closely, you will see that the inscription on the inside of the book was written in 1976. I was two years old that year, the same age as Claire. Granted, I was nearing my third birthday, but a two-yr old is a two-yr old. :)

This book has been safely stored in my box of treasures, and this is the first year I’ve gotten it out for the holidays. This isn’t technically a “Book Bag Favorite” because Momma guards it with her life, but it is a favorite nonetheless. Claire loves the story, and she loves Santa (at least in the book…not necessarily in real life.)

Every time she sees a Santa Hat on someone or something she tells us whether she thinks it’s Santa or not. One of the Christmas Cards she got this year had little creatures drawn on a globe for the “Joy to the World” theme, and a lot of them are wearing Santa Hats. She went through each one saying, “That kitty’s prolly not Santa…That cow’s prolly not Santa…That pola’bear’s prolly not Santa…” Boy, nothing gets by Claire! ;)

This year, we’re hosting the Holiday Festivities at our house…a first! I’m really excited to start these traditions, and selfishly, it’s really nice to not have to worry about packing the sleigh and traveling with a toddler across the frozen tundra. I’ll miss seeing my parents, siblings and nephews on the big day, but it feels good to stay home for Christmas. I can’t wait for Claire to experience the hanging of the stockings tonight and see what Santa brings for her tomorrow.

Because we opted to stay home for the holidays, my hubby’s family has joined us. His parents arrived on Wednesday, and his brother got into town Saturday. Luckily, the storms spared their paths, and it was smooth sailing for the arrival of our guests.

And, for the first time in the history of the company, the office where I’m based as an independent contractor is closed on Christmas Eve, so I’m actually able to take a break from my job! Wow! Not traveling AND having time off from work!? I’m not sure what I’ll do with myself. ;)

With all these extra hands and free time, I’m able to focus on some very important things: being able to relax and have fun! Granny brought some of our favorite recipes, so there has been a lot of cooking and baking, and we’ll finally be able to use the delicate Danish dishes (passed down from Great-Grandma) we’ve had on display in our china cabinet.

Needless to say, Claire loves all the company and excitement, and it’s going to be a sad state of affairs around here when everyone leaves. Thankfully, Daddy has two weeks off from work, so hopefully the blow will be lessened a tiny bit. January 7th is when things will get really interesting when Claire is forced to spend the whole day with boring ol’ Momma. Maybe whatever is currently wrapped in a billion packages under the tree will help ease the transition. :)

But, there’s no need to worry about that now; we’ll cross that snow-and-ice-covered bridge when we get to it. In the meantime, Santa will be on his way soon, and I can’t wait! ;)

Put on a happy face

Well, PaPa and Daey left today for the long drive back home.  They’d surprised us (almost quite literally) with a visit, and they knew they’d only stay for a long weekend.  They squeezed in as much time with Claire as they could on this visit, and we all had a great time.

The last time they were here, in June, the day they left and the following day were extremely rough on Claire…and Momma.  She wasn’t old enough to know that they’d gone bye-bye as in “we won’t see you for a long time” as opposed to “we’ll be back from the store shortly.”  We were going to be seeing them in about a month, but that was no consolation to poor little Claire who wanted to see them right now.

I’m not sure how things will go this time.  They just left, and she’s happily playing in my office while I’m trying to get caught up on files.  I really think she thinks they’ll be back later today.  They won’t; we won’t be seeing them in person until December.  I’m not going to dwell on that…but it’s hard not to brace myself for the worst.

I’m trying to put on a happy face, and I’m trying to remain calm, upbeat and positive.  Maybe this time will go better than last time?

I certainly hope so…for her sake, and mine.  :(

Knock, Knock…

Who’s there?
You!?

I found out yesterday evening that Daey (Claire had trouble saying ‘Granny’ at first, and the nickname ‘Daey’ has stuck!) and PaPa are going to visit us! TODAY. They can’t stand not seeing their baby doll, Claire, for another moment, so they’ve decided to pack up the car and drive 8 hours to see us for a long weekend. I love visitors, but I’d like a little more of a warning.

(Daey and PaPa, if you’re reading this…shame on you! You’re lucky we got the guest room cleaned up last night, or you would have had to sleep on top of all the camping equipment. That’s what happens when you show up TWO MONTHS early, and with no warning.) ;)

Don’t get me wrong. I’m thrilled that they have the time and means to travel at the drop of a hat. (They are retired, footloose and fancy-free.) My parents can’t get away as often as they’d like, so I’m thankful that Claire has at least one set of grandparents she can see on a relatively regular basis.

Well, I just got the call. They are on their way. They’ll be here in roughly 8-hours, give or take. Do you know how long it takes to clean the house? It depends on how quickly your guests are arriving. ;)

I guess I picked the wrong week to fire the maids.

A fun lunch date

I’m starting to feel overwhelmed again. The files keep piling in, and I’m trying to have a social life!

My friend stopped by for lunch with her 2.5 year old little girl, Ava. They are visiting from California. We really miss them, and the girls had a great time playing together.  We all had fun eating lunch, and then they played some more.  Like I said, we really miss them, and even though the lunch date was hectic at times, I’m reminded of how much fun we all have together.  :(

On an exciting note, Ava is completely potty trained (and has been for a long time, actually) and used the potty twice while they were here. Claire was watching and taking notes, so I think that will be a good thing in the long run.

I should get back to work.

Yes, it’s after 5pm and the files are still rollin’ in. Gotta love it! Daddy’s gonna be doing the happy dance when he sees Momma’s check. Too bad most of it’s going to go to cover the cost of room and board at the loony bin.

Breaks my heart…

Granny and Grandpa were here for almost a week, and we had such a good visit. Claire loves playing with them, and she even has her own names for them. Grandpa is “PaPa” and Granny is “Daey.” Huh? Let me explain that last one. :)

We call Daddy’s Momma “Granny” and Momma’s Momma “Grandma.” Both Grandpas are called “Grandpa,” and if we have to refer to both of them at the same time, we add last names. Anyway, Claire’s version of “Grandpa” is “PaPa.” That’s pretty easy to understand. “Granny” is a bit trickier for her 18-month old tongue, and a lot of words that start with the hard “G” sound come out as a “D.” So…Granny would become “Dranny,” which would become “Danny,” which Claire has shortened to “Daey.” So, “Daey” it is. Granny doesn’t mind what she’s called, and Claire doesn’t mind as long as she gets a reaction from the proper person. :)

So, today was the day they decided to drive back home. We waved good-bye to them from the sidewalk, and Claire was all happy. She didn’t realize that they weren’t really coming back, and we won’t see them until July. That’s just over a month away, but she has no concept of time.

She went down for her morning nap without any trouble, and when she woke up, she really wanted PaPa and Daey to read to her and play with her and feed her lunch. They were nowhere to be found.

“PaPa? Daey? Papa bye-bye? Daey bye-bye?”

“Yes, Grandpa and Granny went bye-bye, but we’ll see them in July!”

After lunch, she really wanted PaPa and Daey to read to her and play with her and still, they were nowhere to be found.

Even after the big alligator tears and sobbing, they were still nowhere to be found.

“PaPa? Daey? Please Momma…”

It’s going to be a long day. :(

Heeding Louie the Lightning Bug’s advice

Setting the scene:
I was working in my office, and Claire and Granny were playing in the living room. Grandpa and Daddy are installing an attic fan in the hallway, right outside my office. Daddy is in the attic, upside down in a pile of fiberglass insulation, trying to wire up the fan, and his helper was standing down here in the hallway.

Daddy: (yelling from the attic) “Mmmmmmmmumble mummble circuit off? Mummmmble mummmble.”

Grandpa: (yelling from the hallway and repeating the question back to him to see if he heard him correctly) “Is the circuit off?”

Granny: (hearing Grandpa’s question and yelling from the living room) “Yes, I turned it off.”

Grandpa: (not hearing Granny’s answer) “I don’t know. It won’t electrocute you. It’s only 110.”

Daddy: “MMMMMMMMMMMBLE! OFF!”

Grandpa: “You’ll be fine. It’s not like you’re standing in a bucket of water.”
